The “Gypsy Brewers” at Stillwater Artisanal are looking to open a home base at 321 Kingsland Avenue, which they’re calling “Production.” Stillwater Artisanal officially launched in 2010 and has been ranked as one of the best new brewers worldwide.
For the Greenpoint hub, Founder Brian Strumke envisions an “experimental fermentation facility, creatively integrating a brewery, eatery, bar and event space into a community hub for beer lovers, gourmands, and creatives.” The whole space is set to open in the fall of this year, and in addition to food, drink and creative events, Production will offer visitors limited edition beers and a chance to view the brewing process. Walking down Grand Street past Bushwick Avenue amidst trucking supply shops and duct work fabricators, I almost missed Interboro Spirits and Ale’s new tasting room (942 Grand St.), which just opened a few weeks ago. It’s a raw, industrial space—formerly a manufacturer of naval anchors, and later a wood flooring workshop—that somehow feels warm and inviting, like a little oasis in the midst of all the warehouses. And the approachable vibe is thanks to the friendly folks at the helm.
The Village Voice’s Fifth Annual Brooklyn Pour Craft Beer Festival last weekend filled the Brooklyn Expo Center with over 60 breweries and their fans. Amid a melee of Frisbee, games, balloons, food trucks and tables, there was still room for all the attendees to drink, mingle and even compete in a stein lifting competition.
It turns out Greenpoint is becoming a bit of a mecca for craft beer. Whilst the likes of Brouwerij Lane, Tørst and Dirck the Norseman have really put us on the map as a beer destination, less well-known is the fact that Nassau Avenue’s Keg & Lantern have their very own self-described ‘nano-brewery’ and that today marks their one-year anniversary of in-house brewing.
Last year owner Keiran Breen realized that the large basement below the bar was crying out to be put to use, so he placed an ad on Craigslist for an in-house brewer to come on board. He struck gold when he found Patrick Allen, an enthusiastic home-brewer who was ready to take his weekend hobby to the next level. Patrick promptly quit his job as manager of a fine art photographic printing studio, and set about upsizing his home-brewing knowledge to a far more commercial scale. Continue reading →

NOW OPEN: Greenpoint Cheese + Meat Greenpoint Cheese + Meat softly opened their doors last week. We will have full coverage of all their tasty wares soon but in the meantime you should pop in and check out their delicious meats and cheeses for yourself (not to mention the fresh loaves from Bakeri)! We were excited to attend the Grand Opening reception of Dirck the Norseman this past Thursday and try the in house beer brewed by Erik Olsen and Chris Prout under the name Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. Unsurprisingly, Mayor DiBlasio didn’t make an appearance, but Brooklyn Deputy President Diana Reyna did attend and enjoyed the brews, which we all agreed are impressive – especially for the duos first run. You’ll have to try and let us know what you think.
Highlights of the day included a surprise guest Linda Fulkerson – an ancestor of the first European settler of Greenpoint Dirck the Norseman – who traveled all the way from Kentucky, along with her 8 home schooled kids, and gave a lengthy presentation about her own genealogy along with laminated photos of other notable Dirck ancestors and what sounded like blessings from God (whoever that is.)
