Super Burrito, the California-style Mexican joint that first brought its fare to the Rockaways last summer, is taking over the restaurant space at Brooklyn Bazaar (150 Greenpoint Avenue) as of 5pm today.
You can chow down on Super Burrito’s entire variety of super eats before, during and after all of BK Bazaar’s events.
Super Burrito’s soft opening hours are: 5pm-11pm (Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday) 5pm-1am (Friday and Saturday)
News came out this week that two big names in New York City’s dining scene are expanding to Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The neighborhood is now home to one of Queens’ best Thai restaurants, a spot that’s been on citywide Top 10 lists multiple times, and Greenpoint Avenue will soon be home to a new wood-fired Mexican restaurant run by one of Brooklyn’s most underrated chefs. Of course, this great news isn’t without a little bad news as another long-time Greenpoint watering hole quietly closed its doors a few weeks back.
First, where you can eat. Qi Thai Grill at 176 North 9th Street has crossed over to being a full expansion of Woodside’s SriPraPhai. SriPraPhai’s chef-owner, Sripraphai Tipmanee, had been involved in Qi along with well-regarded chef Pichet Ong, but now the entire space is a part of chef Tipmanee’s realm. Word is the menu has been shortened so that the kitchen can focus on her famed spicy Thai fare. This makes the North 9th Street spot her third restaurant, as she also has one out in Long Island’s Williston Park. Following the success of their annual Winter Restaurant Week, now Grand Street is getting in on all the seasonal action and hosting their own Summer Restaurant Week!
Starting today and running until Sunday August 9th, 16 Grand Street restaurants between Union and Bushwick Avenues will be offering some great meal deals, with two-course lunches from $7-$10 and three-course dinners for $18-$30.

One of our readers recently used the acronym ‘OSOM’ (pronounced a bit like awesome) to describe the area on “the Other Side Of McGuinness.” Now that another restaurant has opened up over there, hot on the heels of Raizes, it seems a particularly apt time to start bringing OSOM into the everyday Greenpoint lexicon.

What else is new, right? Papacitos (999 Manhattan Ave) is closed – again. We think this time it’s for good.
I talked to two of owner Cody Utzman’s former employees who said that “all the staff at Papacitos was let go” and that owner Cody “changed his cell” and is “no where to be found.” Rumor has it that he owes “thousands upon thousands” in back rent and to suppliers.
While we have been through the closing and reopening of Papacitos in the past, it seems like it will stick this time given that Cody’s other two Greenpoint businesses have also changed hands. Earlier this year Brooklyn Standard (188 Nassau Ave) was taken over by local deli owners who, I was told by a Nassau Ave tipster, will be opening a second location on Grand St “any day now.” And Cafe Royal was reopened a few weeks ago as Cafe Edna (195 Nassau Ave) by new owners who wish to remain anonymous and changed the name in an effort to disassociate it from negatives vibes that may have been attached to Royal.
While she was not available to comment, one of Cody’s Papacitos ex-partners Kat McEldowney’s facebook status read: “Who wants to run a restaurant in Greenpoint? I’m serious.”
Update: A reader just sent us this photo that shows that the Board of Health also paid Papacitos a visit.
