The pace of change is swift here in the city, what with permits for new developments constantly being filed (like these for 85 and 87 Calyer Street), but this week, area residents are remembering the bygone gems of the early aughts, like Monkeytown, the performing arts paradise which began in a loft space at 222 Leonard street in 2003. (For those looking to relive the glory, Monkeytown may make an appearance in Mexico City later this year.)

Speaking of entertainment paradises — Newtown Creek! Really. The Newtown Creek Alliance’s long-term plan involves 85 projects along the waterway “that tie industry and recreation—without one compromising the other.”  Continue reading

All Bacon Everything, Greenpoint Burglaries, and $$$ Condos—The Hook-Up 7/21

The condos that are replacing the old New Warsaw Bakery on Lorimer Street have gone on the market, for upwards of $1.5 million per unit.

A guy broke into two Greenpoint businesses in less than one hour, and robbed them. Baoburg (614 Manhattan Ave) and a nearby laundromat were both hit.

Predictably, there’s a new all-bacon tasting menu in Williamsburg at a restaurant called Belly. Continue reading

94th Precinct Nabs Suspect Possibly Connected to Burglary, Search Continues for Men Wanted in Mugging Spree

Police have released images of two of the men wanted in connection with the Sept. 25 robbery spree.

Greenpoint has recently had a wave of robberies and a burglary that have disturbed neighborhood residents. Early in the morning on Sunday, Sept. 25, four separate robberies occurred within 90 minutes of each other.

The first robbery took place around 3:15am at the corner of Jackson Street and Meeker Avenue when four men approached a 26 year-old victim, attacked him, and took his backpack, iPhone, camera, and books.

The second incident took place around 4am at Jewel Street and Meserole Avenue when a 34-year old man was attacked by three men and robbed of his iPhone, $300 in cash, and wallet. The victim was struck in the face during the robbery and required stitches to close a laceration he received.

The third incident occurred shortly after at 4:30am at Leonard Street and Driggs Avenue when two men robbed a 33-year old man at knifepoint of his iPhone and credit cards. This victim was unharmed.

The final robbery took place at Meserole Avenue and Diamond Street and involved two men attacking a 32-year old man and stealing his phone and wallet.

Police have strong video and photo evidence in the robberies and are looking for a group of four men in connection with all of the incidents.

Many Greenpoint & Williamsburg Businesses Burglarized; 2 Men Wanted

Video footage on  CBS Local shows two suspects, white males who broke into the front doors of many local Greenpoint and Williamsburg businesses, stole cash and fled in a white minivan.

They are suspects in the burglaries of the following Greenpoint businesses:

• Connie O’s, 158 Norman Ave., between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. on June 18;

• Mrs. Kim’s, 150 Franklin St., between 3 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. June 28;

• TBD Bar, 224 Franklin St., around 3:40 a.m. July 3;

• Grandma Rose’s, 457 Graham Ave., between 12:57 a.m. and 3 a.m. July 3;

• One Stop Beer Shop, 134 Kingsland Ave., between 4:37 and 5 a.m. July 21;

• Cookie Road, 94 Franklin St., around 6:30 a.m. July 22;

• Freddy Food Market, 257 Driggs Ave., between 1:53 and 1:56 a.m. July 22;

• Boulevard Tavern, 557 Meeker Ave., at 5:33 a.m. July 22;

• Ameenas Florist, 183 Norman Ave., between 8 p.m. July 25 and 9:30 a.m. July 26.

They also are believed to have robbed the following Williamsburg businesses:

• Fat Goose, 125 Wythe Ave., at 3:09 a.m. July 26;

• Modca, 103 North 3rd St., between 11 p.m. July 25 and 6 a.m. July 26;

• Osio Coffee Shop, 133 Roebling St., around 1:50 a.m. July 26;
