On July 10, a synagogue on 284 Keap Street in Williamsburg was burglarized in the middle of the night. The suspect stole money from their donation box.

NY Daily News reports that police said that the thief climbed into a second-floor window at Congregation Yetev Lev Satmar synagogue.

According to ABC 7, police have now released surveillance footage of the burglary. The footage showed the man walking through the synagogue with a black surgical mask, NY cap, and latex gloves.

While the suspect’s motives were unclear, there have been a string of crimes targeting the Jewish community this year in Brooklyn. In February, yeshiva school buses in Williamsburg were found vandalized with swastikas. Based on NYPD hate crime reported data, from the first six months of the year in 2022, there were 149 confirmed antisemitic incidents, compared to 106 in first six months of 2021.

Police are still looking for the burglar so if anyone has any information, call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
