In Buddhism, the term mindfulness is interchangeable with meditation.
Mindfulness is that part of the mind we need to cultivate in order to practice meditation. Mindfulness technically means to remember, to be mindful. We already have mindfulness, the problem is we have mindfulness of the wrong things. For example, if we have a tendency towards anxiety we’ve already mastered mindfulness of remembering all the things that might go wrong.
That’s why we need to train in mindfulness of the right things, to train ourselves to focus on those aspects of our mind that produce what we actually want – peace, happiness and an expansive and open heart.
We can think of meditation as focusing the mind on the internal causes of peace and happiness. The beautiful thing is we carry these internal causes with us everywhere we go. While we all already have them, we need to learn how to recognize them. Once we can recognize our internal causes of peace and happiness. we then train in remaining mindful of them.
This is essentially what the practice of meditation is all about, and how it can be used to completely eradicate all suffering, including the suffering of anxiety.
A few weeks ago we wrote about local healing and wellness center Maha Rose expanding to the space next door. The additional 1500-square-foot space (they’re currently at 97 Green Street) will feature an infrared sauna, and additional treatment and workshop rooms. After getting down and dirty and deep into the construction process, they have decided to use the power of crowdfunding to help offset the work, which is taking them twice as long and costing more than double what they anticipated.
They hope to be open in mid-September and are asking the community for help in reaching their financial goals so they can continue to offer a unique set of services and provide a safe space for North Brooklynites to breathe, learn, heal and expand their consciousness. Yoga doesn’t have to be a quiet, sober meditative experience owned by ommmmm’s — this weekend (Sunday, 8/12) you can get your drink on while you downward dog, at Northern Territory (12 Franklin St). The bar’s rooftop will play host to Drunk Yoga, a series of classes that take the pressure out of the practice. Class starts at 10am, and costs $35—which includes two glasses of wine. Bring your own mat.
There’s an “energy painting” class coming to Greenpoint next Saturday, and it “will allow you to connect with your heart and your soul.” The afternoon class at Awakening (605 Manhattan Ave) starts with a guided meditation to help you tap into your inner voice, and afterward will transition into freeform painting. It’s open to all levels, even if you’ve never painted before—so if you are looking to express yourself through art without judgement and put your brain into cruise control for a bit, this may be the class for you. “By listening to your inner voice paint what you hear/see, and release and unfold anything what will show up for you.” Artist Paulina Skorwider will host, and materials (canvas and acrylic paints) are included. What is microblading, you say? It’s a semi-permanent tattoo of thin, fine hair strokes that give a natural appearance of brows. Since the pen is only reaching the superficial layer of skin (with semi-permanent ink), you can expect the results to last about 10 to 18 months depending on your skin type. There’s some magical news from the mystical Greenpoint wellness destination Maha Rose (97 Green Street).
The center for healing will be expanding into the space next door. With plans to open the new addition in September, Maha Rose will offer a second workshop room, a sauna, an additional treatment room, an office, and more lounge space with crystals, tarot cards, and books. What else does this mean? With a bigger healing center, Maha Rose will also offering memberships and sauna packages. Whew, that’s exciting!
The space was notoriously featured in Vogue when they expanded upstate with their Catskills retreat center Maha Rose North two years ago. Artist Lisa Levine started Maha Rose in her loft-like Greenpoint home more than a decade ago when she began offering meditation sessions and a space for friends and colleagues to explore alternative healing methods. After formally studying reiki, breathwork and acupuncture, and getting a huge interest from other healers to use the space, in 2014 she officially opened the doors to the public (and has since moved out so the space is 100% Maha Rose). An old warehouse on the corner of Nassau Avenue and North 14th Street is slated to become a climbing gym, according to real estate site The Real Deal. Vital Climbing Gym, a chain based in California, has signed a 15-year lease on the 31,000 square foot space and plans to build it out and extend the square footage with a working rooftop. Apparently they are planning a 24-hour full-service gym, and expect it to be open by next summer. This will be the gym’s first location on the East coast.

On the Northside of Williamsburg, inside one of the many new towers that have arisen, sits Kadampa Meditation Center — a cozy, peaceful space with bright walls, golden Buddhas and very chill teachers. In this busy town, coming back to ourselves for simple, quiet reflection is increasingly difficult. Even in this space of North Brooklyn that boasts apothecaries, yoga studios, and new age classes, we can struggle to find that which we are all searching for: Peace and Happiness.
Simply put, you just can’t exercise the fat away. Some of you have been exercising up to 5 days a week only to jump on the scale and see very little difference in your weight. This can be frustrating when you’re putting a lot of effort into your workouts; and can often make you question your weight loss game plan.
We’ve been demanding answers to these questions from the muscle gods; and as always…nothing! But studies have given us some good clues as to why we’ve been getting steadily fatter for the past few decades –despite a growing increase in physical activity.
Statistics show that health club revenues increased from $200 million in 1972 to $16 billion in 2005!!
The first NYC marathon was in 1970 with only 137 entrants; and in 2008 there were 39,000 entrants and nearly 60,000 applicants.
So if being lazy makes us fat and exercise prevents or inhibits it, shouldn’t this fitness revolution have launched an epidemic of leanness? Hmmm. But in reality, this so-called fitness revolution has been coexisting with an epidemic of obesity. Another hmmm. Continue reading →
