[email protected] Bounces Back With a Grand Rebrand After Almost Closing

Being consistent with exercise has never come easy to me. Even though I like the exhilarating feeling of a good post-workout sweat, it’s getting up and actually going that is my challenge. My mind would make up all kinds of excuses to avoid going to the gym, everything from the bad weather to just not feeling like it, but mostly I would tell myself that I don’t have time.

The fact that for several years, I’ve managed to go to [email protected] (31 Nassau Ave) at least once per week is a telltale sign of its appeal. I find [email protected] to be a warm, welcoming environment that distinguishes itself from your run-of-the-mill commercial gyms, and their signature Introversion Training whips me into shape in 30 minutes.

Self-proclaimed as a”Zen Chill Zone,” I can say from personal experience that [email protected] feels like a wellness sanctuary, rooted in the neighborhood but with elements reminiscent of exotic parts of the world. After a long week of work, I come here, push my muscles into exhaustion in the most meditative way. Continue reading

[email protected] Fitness Tip: Contrary to popular belief, exercise does NOT cause weight loss!

Simply put, you just can’t exercise the fat away. Some of you have been exercising up to 5 days a week only to jump on the scale and see very little difference in your weight. This can be frustrating when you’re putting a lot of effort into your workouts; and can often make you question your weight loss game plan.

We’ve been demanding answers to these questions from the muscle gods; and as always…nothing! But studies have given us some good clues as to why we’ve been getting steadily fatter for the past few decades, despite a growing increase in physical activity.

Statistics show that health club revenues increased from $200 million in 1972 to a whopping $16 billion in 2005!!

The first NYC marathon was in 1970 with only 137 entrants; and in 2008 there were 39,000 entrants and nearly 60,000 applicants.

So if being lazy makes us fat and exercise prevents or inhibits it, shouldn’t this fitness revolution have launched an epidemic of leanness? Hmmm. But in reality, this so-called fitness revolution has been coexisting with an epidemic of obesity. Another hmmm.

Very little evidence exists to support the belief that the number of calories we expend has any effect on how fat we are. When you increase the energy you expend, the evidence is very good that you’ll eat more to compensate. We actually burn very few calories with moderate exercise; and the effort can be easily undone with even the smallest bite or beverage.

Ran 5 miles, burns off 400 calories
Eats one slice of pizza, puts 400 calories back on

There was a Berkeley study that collected detailed information on over 13,000 habitual runners over the course of several years. And although those who ran the most tended to weigh the least, they all got fatter with each passing year – even those who ran over 8 miles a day!

It might be time to question our underlying beliefs. Is it something other than the amount of calories we consume and expend that determines whether we get fat?

Now, this is all not to say that exercise doesn’t have benefits. It absolutely does; and without it, you could be setting yourself up for failure on your weight loss journey. But, to rely on exercise as a “cause” for weight loss will only serve to disappoint you.

But don’t take our word for it, go ahead try it. But when you find yourself spinning your wheels, it may be time to start looking for other solutions. And when the time comes that exercise is not enough to induce weight loss… and it will; here are some things you can start to look at that could make the difference.

The first area you should start questioning is your diet.

  • What does your diet look like?
  • How much alcohol do you drink per week?
  • How much sugar is in your diet?
  • What percentage of carbohydrates make of your total daily calories?
  • Are you eating too much after your workouts?
  • What type of food are you eating after your workouts?

These are just some of the questions you can start to explore. However, if you’re still unsure on how to make healthier food choices, the second option can be to seek professional guidance.

The B.E.S.T. Diet Revival is a powerful food plan sent to you in structured phases, and is ideal for those seeking:

  • A customized regimented meal plan focused on your success
  • Detoxification and self-control from harmful processed foods

  • Wholesome, mindful eating behaviors and habits

  • More confidence around food!

Spring Back into Fitness (When You Know You Haven’t Moved Since the Holidays)

The holiday season no doubt does a lot of damage to our health and wellness; not only are our waistlines protesting against our pants, but our self-esteem manages to find an all-new low, and it becomes easy to beat ourselves up about our unhealthy lifestyles (while eating a piece of pie and sipping on a milkshake. We’ve all been there). But guess what? The holiday season is officially over! Spring is here, and with it comes a fresh opportunity to retake control of our health and fitness goals. So, here are just a couple of simple tips on how to do just that.

  1. Find yourself a workout partner!
It can be hard to self-motivate! That’s why it’s so important to have someone that holds you accountable! Not to mention, keeping someone else in line with their goals is a great way to stay aligned with your own. Think about a couple of people that you might rely on for this. Who in your life shares your goals towards health and wellness? When you’ve come up with a short list, invite them to the gym or to a healthy cookout. You’d be surprised how many of us just need a little push to jump-start us on that path back to health.

  1. Overcome your fear of the gym.
Gym-timidation is a real thing, we all know this. You walk into these big gyms with all their big machines and big muscles, and sometimes you just want to run to the nearest ice cream parlor for some TLC. But your fitness and wellness goals can’t run on mantras and intention alone — you must learn to overcome your fears of the gym in order to start seeing real progress. Of course, you can easily streamline the process: find a local boutique gym near you! Avoid the crowds, avoid the egos, avoid the smells.

  1. Seek out a program that meets your needs.
Take responsibility. Throughout this process, using a program to keep you on task and focused on your goals is an excellent way to ensure that all of your hard work is realized! Do some research on fitness and diet programs in your area and see if any of them speak to your needs. If so, jump on board! Investing in yourself can never be a waste, particularly when your long-term health is at risk.

  1. Get into meal prep.
Mentally investing in meal preparation is a great way to make sure that you’re regulating your intake, getting all of your essentialmacronutrients in each meal, and extending the reach of your dollar. Do some research to figure out your ideal macronutrient distribution, and get started prepping! If you feel that this is an area in which you can’t trust yourself to follow through for whatever reason, be sure to prioritize a food plan in the program you seek out–an improved diet is the most important key to slimming down, getting lean, and building strength.

  1. Stay in touch with your goals.
Whether it’s daily meditation, an e-mail notification, a call from a friend, or a scolding from a trainer, find the method that refocuses you best. Daily interruptions, cravings and everyday exhaustion are the enemies of long-term progress — so utilizing the resources around you to maintain focus is an excellent way to keep your health and wellness goals at the forefront.
