Ok, let’s be real. We all ate ourselves to pieces last week and with the holidays just around the corner, we’re not stopping. I like to binge eat as much as the next guy, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to remain physically active while doing so. It’s easier said than done, but our friend Dy from Human at Ease (ease is their middle last name) has a program that guides people through the intense process of getting fit, and as a result, it’s a lot less intimidating. Dear Flannery, I’m looking to escape the city and have a weekend (or more) of wellness. Do you recommend any yoga retreats that are easily accessible by train (amtrak/metronorth/etc.?) Thanks!
Dear “Yoga Escape”,
Take 10 days off and head up to the Berkshires for a FREE Vipassana Yoga experience. Food and lodging are free, paid for by unsolicited donations by students who have participated. Volunteers feed you and silently help you around. See, you won’t be talking. Or doing yoga, per se. Or texting or writing in your dream journal. Vipassana is a regimented practice of early rising, simple vegetarian meals, and days spent sitting, standing, and walking in silence (for more info and to sign up, visit Dhamma.org).
Full disclosure: while I have practiced the technique in shorter intervals, I have never been able to successfully schedule a retreat. Best to do so 6 months in advance, particularly if you’re a woman. Men can often get a reservation with shorter notice. There are Vipassana locations worldwide offering the same 10 day format. After participating once, you can attend again as a participant or a volunteer, cooking meals, attending to students and chatting. Eventually you can build to 30 day practices.
Co-working spaces are more than just a passing trend–they seem to be the wave of the future for small businesses and start-ups, especially in Brooklyn. This is exactly the case at Green Desk‘s 240 Kent location, where you’ll find a husband-and-wife-run sex toy business down the hall from a kids health food campaign, both upstairs from a new age-y crystal boutique.
The business and retail owners at 240 Kent are vocal about the leeway for experimentation and growth that the space affords them.
“It’s great because we have the flexbility of trying out our business to see if it works,” said Raymond Ng of Essbar Juicing, located on the ground floor of the building, which is exclusively devoted to retail and food outlets.
The ground floor space, which opened in July, is Brooklyn’s answer to the Chelsea Market, with a maze of speciality food vendors, handmade clothing retailers, and vintage sellers, expanding the options available to anyone talking a stroll along the Kent Avenue waterfront. Once a barren warehouse zone, we’ve watched the whole area undergo a major revamp–from the East River Ferry to the Brooklyn Flea and the Edge (and a bevy of other modern high rises). Now, with the advent of this rapidly expanding co-working/retail establishment, the stretch of Kent between N. 12th and N.1st is quickly becoming a hub of young businesses.
Whether you’re craving a French Toast Cupcake (a la Brooklyn Cupcake or an “Vape Pen” to curb a smoking habit (from Vapor Lounge NY), the stores at 240 Kent are well worth exploring.
It’s easy to forget that Greenpoint is situated in a massive city, especially when we feel as safe in our neighborhood as we do. But, that’s just it–we live in a city of over 8 million people. And the unfortunate reality of being in an urban center is that we have to be extra aware of our surroundings and take some precautions to ensure that we don’t encounter a potentially dangerous situation.
That’s not to say that you should board up your windows and hide out in your basement with a transistor radio and tinfoil hat. These are common sense suggestions, most of which you are already know. But, given the recent spike in crime in the area (especially the terrifying home invasions on Monday night), we thought we’d share some helpful tips from our friends at the 94th precinct and The Anti-Violence Project. Tim Haft, owner/trainer of Beastanetics and Punk Rope gave me a personal training consultation at McCarren Park and now I have some new pull-up techniques, serious ass burn (in a good way) and a new attitude toward running!
Before we met, Tim asked me to tell him my fitness goals:
“My fitness goal are:
1. lose 10lb, because I gained 10lb. 2. Not eat like a fat freak, because I do that. 3. Tone up my butt and thighs.
I am happy with everything else!
I run a few times a week, weight train and ride my bike like 15-20 miles per week. And somehow I still managed to gain 10lb!” Continue reading →
This is my final nail report for a while. Man, it’s expensive, especially with the gel habit I developed. Plus I want to “air” them out, let them breathe. My last stop before our amazing trip to Florida was H&Q on Manhattan Ave where I got my Florida Sunrise Nails.
By this point, I was pretty picky with my nail selections, and by picky I mean outrageous. My thinking is if gel is going to last for two weeks then I am going to make it count. I think I was heavily influenced by a stack of belts I photographed at work color wise for this set. (Belts inspire me? I think I need to career make-over.) Continue reading →
