Greenpointers: What are the biggest changes that your hair goes through in the winter months?
Amy Bradbury: It tends to be more dry so a lot more people need to use a heavier conditioner or a mask and use products that help with a drier scalp for dandruff or static.
Laura Estroff: Also, your hair tends to get really tangled on the ends due to scarves or hoods or hats, so using moisturizing products is huge, as well as masks. A lot of people also have hat hair from their hats so something like a dry shampoo will help reduce the oil and give you a little more life and volume.Continue reading →

Cory Feierman: I think that music is always directed to how you’re feeling and how the world is treating you and that includes the weather. What I find uplifting in the winter time are the classic power pop records like the first two Big Star records, Todd Rundgren Something/Anything? or maybe the second Carole King record. Summer cocktail season is a highly-anticipated time of the year, and for good reason. Sangria, frozen margs, tiki drinks, magnums of rosé…it’s a pretty unbeatable scene. But once cooler temperatures head this way, Brooklyn’s bartenders take full advantage of fall flavors, adding beverages to their lists that incorporate pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and maple. Plus, the return of 35-degree temperatures means that hot cocktails are acceptable orders once again (and for this, we’re very grateful). Now that the holidays are looming in the not-at-all-distant future, we owe it to ourselves to enjoy 2017’s fall cocktails before this magical and all-too-brief season comes to an end. Greenpointers: Is there a favorite cocktail that you have on the menu that you could recommend if you want to feel more uplifted in the winter months?
Jeremy Wilson: We usually come up with a couple of hot drinks for the winter. We have the hot toddy that we always do called Elsa’s Toddy after our sister bar. We don’t have it on the menu but especially when it’s snowing, people come in and just ask for it and of course we make it for them. It’s rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple syrup that’s cut with water, fresh mint, hot water and angostura bitters on top. It’s pretty clean and refreshing and just makes you feel better.Continue reading →
Though it pains me as a proud Brooklynite, the Greenpoint is a variation on the famous cocktail the Manhattan. The drink, created by Michael McIlory at NYC’s legendary Milk and Honey, gets it name because the Chartreuse that is its main ingredient creates a green hue.
So, what goes into a Greenpoint? The drink consists of two ounces of rye whiskey and a half ounce of yellow Chartreuse. Then add another half ounce of sweet vermouth. The last two ingredients are pinches of angostura bitters and orange bitters. Take all the ingredients and put them in a mixing glass with ice. Next, stir and strain it into a cocktail glass. Finally, top it off with a lemon twist garnish. Continue reading →

A lot of local places describe themselves as ‘neighborhood restaurants’. But, aside from location, what does this actually mean? That a place is affordable? Has good food? Friendly service? Lots of regulars? Staying power?
Recently I met with some of the team behind the soon-to-open restaurant on the corner of Franklin and Kent streets. They told me all about their plans to create their own take on the ‘neighborhood restaurant’ in Greenpoint and it sounds as though they could be on track to get the formula just right.
The restaurant, which currently goes by the working title of ‘Clouet’, is headed up by Henry Rich, owner of Italian restaurants Rucola in Boerum Hill and Fitzcarraldo in East Williamsburg.
