Northern Territory Rooftop Bar Officially Open!

Northern Territory Rooftop View
Skyline View that will have Punters Coming in Droves

Its official: Judging by a weekend of gleaming porcelain limbs sunning themselves in McCarren Park, our long-lost love Springtime has finally returned! Which means it’s now time to start thinking about where we can make the most of these warmer days and nights.

When I popped into Aussie newcomer Northern Territory (12 Franklin Street) on Saturday evening I was happy to learn that their rooftop bar is now fully operational. Continue reading

Brooklyn Safehouse: Yet MORE New Eats on Franklin Street

BK_Safehouse_Bar_Greenpoint
Brooklyn Safehouse

On a gorgeous springlike evening last week, Jen G and I popped into the newly opened Brooklyn Safehouse for an early dinner. This is the place at 120 Franklin Street, which seems to have been in the making for at least two years and finally opened its doors last month. Continue reading

Pavlova + Rooftop at Greenpoint’s New Bar Northern Territory

New Restaurant on Franklin St: Northern Territory

It may be hard to remember those sweet hot nights of summer but, when they finally roll round, al fresco drinking spots will be high in demand. The small rooftop at Night of Joy is usually my favorite, but the view of the BQE often leaves something to be desired. Berry Park’s roof has a better view and a far larger capacity, but now the team behind the popular drinking mecca is in danger of stealing their own thunder.

Last week the owners of Berry Park opened up Northern Territory (12 Franklin St) a great new bar and restaurant with a huge rooftop over-looking the East River. They are still adding the finishing touches upstairs but assure us the rooftop will be open at the beginning of April, just in time for the appearance of some warmer weather. Continue reading

The Moonlight Mile

Beer, Bourbon and Rock’n’Roll! This unholy trinity forms the solid foundations of The Moonlight Mile, a spanking-new Greenpoint watering hole co-run by Garry Embry who, by no coincidence, lists them as his three absolute favorite things in life. Continue reading

WENDY’S BAR GUTTED – New hipster spot coming?

Wendy's Bar - 123 Greenpoint Ave - Closed

Walking down Greenpoint Ave. I noted that Wendy’s Bar (123 Greenpoint Ave) was being gutted, all its contents into a dumpster. I couldn’t get any information on what was going on or what will open up there next. This thread on Chowhound from October 2013 laments its closing and discusses impending “homogeny” in the area as other Polish joints close.  Continue reading

Park Luncheonette Is Finally Open – And Their Pizza Rules – 24 Hrs A Day!

Eating out on the cheap can be tough in Greenpoint, especially if you want to still be fancy about it. Park Luncheonette (334 Driggs Ave) is now open (24 hours a day!) and you can eat a $2 slice of pizza while enjoying not cheap beer and cocktails. It is where budget meets cool – right near McCarren Park – and it’s delicious.  Continue reading

“Blue Gas Flames And Birds Twirling” A Chat With Ed Raven On Dirck The Norseman and Grain Terminal Brewery

Ed Raven, of Raven Importing Company and owner of Brouwerij Lane, promised that the new brewery he is opening called Grain Terminal, along with a bar/restaurant called Dirck The Norseman will be – “the most awesome sunset beer drinking spot in Brooklyn.”

Sounds great right? When I visited the huge warehouse space on No. 15th St and Franklin St. in Greenpoint, which has a view of the Manhattan skyline and Bushwick Inlet, my next question was when is it going to open? Continue reading

New Bar, Grand Ferry, Opens Tonight

If you have any relationship with The Richardson—albeit it a one-nighter, Grand Ferry (229 Kent Ave) will feel strangely, wonderfully, familiar. And that’s because co-founders Jon Derosa and Joel Lee Kulp—as well as the staff, are transplants from Greenpoint’s popular speakeasy. Located on Kent Ave in Williamsburg, this waterfront tavern is inspired by a ferry that docked nearby until 1918.

Dig old stuff? If you are an antique nut like me, you will appreciate that the mirrors, prints, and resident mermaid (who exists as a sculpture and is printed on Grand Ferry’s matchbox) all hail from Kulp’s treks to the Mecca of antique fairs—Brimfield. Lining the walls are early 20th century prints of the East River—including one of the East River bridge, now known as the Williamsburg Bridge. Continue reading

The Bounty, The River Styx, Alameda, Broken Land, Propeller, Spina, Torst, Achilles Heel: New Greenpoint Bars, Restaurants & Coffee Shops Round-Up

Greenpoint, you are so spoiled! Now it will be even more difficult to figure out where to go for dinner or a cocktail because there has been an explosion of new places! Can’t keep up? Here is a brief rundown of all the open and soon to be open bars, restaurants and coffee shops in the hood. It’s kind of insane, right?! Let us know in the comments if you have tried any of the new places and what you think. Stay tuned for in depth reviews!

Officially Open in Greenpoint:

Achilles Heel (180 West St) We saw it finally opened on Instagram via @mfade. Tarlow considered the history of the Greenpoint waterfront when he designed the menu and space. According to Grub Street, Achilles Heel is “a café and bar meant to evoke the always-open grocery and drinking spot that once sustained Greenpoint dockworkers at its West Street address between 1900 and 1960.” Grab a coffee and a fresh snack sourced from Marlow & Daughters on your way to the Ferry and enjoy an afternoon Hemingway Daiquiri or a glass of wine near the piano after a long day at the office. Coming soon… a New England Style Clam Chowdah!

Torst (615 Manhattan Ave) A fancy beer bar for beer nerds. This spot was great for an after work beer and a delicious cheese plate. The beer list is extensive and the tapping system is state of the art. As described on Gothamist: “Tørst offers a selection of 21 draft and 200 bottled beers, including rare, international brews not seen before now in the States … the guys installed a custom-built draught system called the Flux Capacitor, which allows individual draft lines to be temperature and pressure customized for specific beers, plus a system that allows for four different temperature controls.” Like I said, it’s for beer nerds.

Jimmy’s Diner (92 Calyer St) Formerly Calyer, Jimmy’s Diner #2 has opened up literally overnight! This photo sent to me by Paulie Gee. The menu will be similar to the Union Ave location. Get ready for mac n’ cheese, fried chicken and perhaps some key lime pie?!

Spina (107 Franklin St) It’s a flower shop slash coffee shop and get this  -the coffee is BLUE BOTTLE! Spina’s main business is social event planning, but after a visit to Italy and San Francisco, owner Paul Tsang and his partner Vanessa Chinga-Haven decided to start serving coffee in the new Franklin St space because, “coffee is aromatic and flowers are aromatic,” Paul told Greenpointers. How lovely. Continue reading
