Greenpoint Beer & Ale (7 North 15th Street) simply couldn’t contain themselves to one Oktoberfest weekend so they decided to celebrate the booziest of holidays all damn month. They’ll kick off this weekend Oct. 8th, with a brilliant lineup of house lagers and pilsners plus a very special guest list from our favorite German purveyors, Shelton Brothers (listed below:) All month they’ll have special beer releases and seasonal food offerings that will propel you mind, soul and liver immediately to November, OH BOY!

Check out their Oktoberfest Guest Beers:

Mahrs Ungespundet Lager, 5.2%, Kellerbier
Their favorite lager on planet earth and very highly regarded. Fresh, perfumy hop aroma. Remarkably smooth, very fresh flavors and a spritzy dry finish with beautiful balance. This is a delicious, appetizing beer and a true taste of Germany. Continue reading

Your Favorite Suds, Finally Portable from Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co.

geb_0489 greenpoint-beer-can-1_greenpoint_brothers-buoyTake it from us: there really is no way to prepare your body for the consumption of alcohol at ten o’clock in the morning. No amount of crack-of-dawn jogging, smoothie making or transcendent meditation will make it any easier to knock back even one sip of a strong brew before your breakfast has begun to digest. We don’t know how we didn’t expect this, showing up to photograph the first-ever canning run at Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. The process, led by Iron Heart Canning was mind blowing enough even without the pre-lunch intoxication.

Far from the beginning of this brewery’s story, this canning is but an exciting new chapter in their long history making and importing wonderful beer. Owner Ed Raven has been in the business of great suds since the 1980s. Not long after getting his start with the Brooklyn Brewery, he began his own importing company, RavenBrands, and opened the Brouwerij Lane beer shop on Greenpoint Avenue in the early 2000s. After Raven opened Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. in 2014, the beer shop began to serve as a pseudo-training ground for young hopefuls who want to work at the brewery–honing their palettes and familiarizing themselves with beers from all over the world. So You Wanna Watch Sunday Football in a Local Bar?

Image from (spoiler alert) Keg & Lantern

Nowadays, Greenpoint has a bewildering number of bars, but many of the best ones aren’t really places to watch a football game. So what makes a great sports bar where you can watch all the Sunday N.F.L action (or Monday night or Thursday night or Saturday College Football)? First, the bar has to have a big screen TV, preferably many TVs, so if you don’t root for the Giants or the Jets you can still catch your team’s game. Second, the bar’s gotta have good cheap beer and preferably some kind of beer and shot specials. Also, who doesn’t watch a football game without getting the munchies? A bar that serves pub grub has to rate higher than one that doesn’t. Finally, you want to watch with a good crowd, not in some mausoleum. With those categories in mind, here is a list of the top ten places to watch an N.F.L game! Continue reading

The Seedy Underbelly of Greenpoint, Plus Lube in a Laundromat — The Hook-Up 3/18

NYPD loot. (Source: NYPD)
NYPD loot. (Source: NYPD)

There have been more than a couple shots fired in our neck of the woods over the last week. On Tuesday, two gunmen were apprehended at North 4th & Kent following an armed robbery. Then, on Wednesday, a member of the North Brooklyn Community Group on Facebook said a neighbor witnessed a teenager fire a hand gun at McCarren Skate Park around 5 p.m. before fleeing on a bike.

The seedy underbelly of Greenpoint continues its chorus with a drug bust of a $10-million-per-year operation. Cops seized 400 pounds of marijuana, 1,100 containers of retail-ready marijuana, mushrooms, liquid THC, liquid PCP and liquid HGH from Philip Feng, 36, and Victor Bae, 35.

Northside Music Festival has confirmed its initial lineup. Conor Oberst, making a comeback!

Ready Set, a local set design company, is expanding into 15,000 sq. ft. of additional space at 100 Sutton Street, adjoining its current space at 663 Morgan Avenue.

Sunshine Laundromat — the pinball place — just became a little more well-rounded with its installation of a vending machine full of Plan B, pregnancy tests, and lube. According to the owner, they’re not in earnest about becoming a new family planning hub.

Greenpoint Beer & Ale is fed up with the firkin ignorance of you locals, so they’re turning it into a drinking opportunity this weekend.
The historic Union Baptist Church is due for repairs after its century-plus run in Greenpoint.
