Samson’s: By The Book? Whose Book?

Delilah’s owner Tommy Ferrick.

New bar openings in the Greenpoint neighborhood are always exciting for us. Being the men-about-town that we are, we’ve hit up nearly all the hottest and hippest spots from Driggs to Ash. Yet ever since the closing of our perpetual ride-or-die watering hole,  Greenpoint Heights, we have been searching for that “everybody knows your name” kind of place.

At long last, we may have found our home away from home once again.

Nestled in what should be called “The Little Steak-Shop That Could,” Delilah’s Steaks (55 McGuinness Boulevard), sits the delightful new seven seater bar with the unbearably appropriate name: Samson’s. Yet unlike the Biblical frenemies, Samson’s is the perfect complement to owner Tommy Ferrick’s cheesesteak mecca—the first step in his risky but ever-so-admirable master plan to battle the lumbering titans that are Seamless and other services like it. Late Nite Cocktails and Dreams at The Regal

When conjuring images of legendary bartenders, you might be reminded of Tom Cruise doing the Hippy Hippy Shake in Cocktail. While their scene is more chic and the cocktails are more artfully crafted, the bartenders at The Regal in Williamsburg are having no less fun (and are arguably no less charming) than Tom Cruise’s character in that film.

We stopped by on a Sunday night a few weeks ago to meet and drink with Adam Lipiec, one of The Regal’s star bartenders. Adam’s a native of Poland and had bartended in Europe—in his home country, Ibiza, and London—before coming to New York. Aside from immediately noticing that Adam’s a genuinely friendly tall drink of water, you’ll spot him mixing drinks with incredible flair. He gracefully tosses a napkin and twirls it around to have it touch down delicately on the back of his hand as if it’s a butterfly landing on a flower petal. Drinks get shaken with a vigorous flourish, and shakers flip in the air and get thrown behind his back with the ease of a master juggler. Some of the cocktails require use of a blowtorch; if you’re in a fiery mood, get The Spitfire—sotol, pineapple, lime, jalapeño infused agave, for $10. Continue reading

Greenpoint Gals Keep It Real: Concrete + Water Owner Hannah Dilworth

Hannah Dilworth

Hannah Dilworth may own Williamsburg shop Concrete + Water, but her heart belongs to Greenpoint, where she lives with her fiancé and their dog Henry.

Hannah’s shop is a beautiful, stylish sight to behold, with gorgeous, well-curated items, from the perfect summer bikini to the most current pair of sunnies.

A recent panel at the shop, sponsored by Made Real Vodka and moderated by its founder Nicole Williams, featured a fun and lively group of female North Brooklyn entrepreneurs. As would-be entrepreneurs sipped a spicy honey-vodka cocktail, they listened to Hannah, Victorian Deych, Kilee Hughes and Lenore Champagne Beirne discussing the confidence required to be your own boss in a hostile economic climate. Afterwards, we chatted with Hannah about the event, her shop, collaborating with her partner, and how she turned her passion into a lifestyle.

Recently Shuttered Champion Coffee will Reopen at Two New Locations

Champion_shutter_greenpoint_yelp

Champion Coffee may have recently shuttered at 1108 Manhattan Avenue (due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’), but caffeine addicts have no reason to be be sad. Two new Champions are soon to spring up elsewhere in Greenpoint to replace it.

First up will be a new cafe at 142 Nassau Avenue, on the site of Sweet Fox, which has now closed down. Champion’s Talitha Whidbee tells us that “Sweet Fox owner Jean Marc was ready to get back to his catering life and away from the constant demands of a cafe so we bought Sweet Fox from him which we will remodel over the next month and re-open as Champion Coffee.” This location will be almost exactly the same as the original Champion (with a slightly pared down food menu), and will be opening around September 22nd.

There is also a second, larger space in the pipeline, at 1107 Manhattan Avenue, directly across the road from the original. “Due to its size it will be a little longer in coming to fruition, but we are shooting for end of November”, Talitha tells us. This location will have the standard Champion food and drink menu, with the addition of kombucha on tap from Mombucha and a few other exclusive beverages.

In the meantime North Greenpointers craving a coffee fix could do worse than to try out the newly opened Sweetleaf Coffee (or Propeller, or Early, or Bakeri…).

‘The 12 Bottle Bar’ Authors’ Talk and Cocktails at Word Bookstore (07/23)

Summer Reading Sorted © Rosie de Belgeonne

It’s about this time of year that I suddenly to realize I’m spending way too much money in bars: a post-work G&T here, a brunch Bloody Mary there, a rooftop Aperol Spritz on a Sunday afternoon…the list goes on. And while summer-time drinking is delightful in every way, if one’s not careful all these artisanal cocktails can also be a fast track route to financial ruin before the season’s even half way through.

Which is why it’s awesome timing for the launch of a new book titled The 12 Bottle Bar (Workman Publishing, $14.95). Unlike your usual schmancy home cocktail guide with glossy photos and a million ingredients you’ll never end up buying (or will buy but never end up using again), this is a practical paperback manual to the bare essentials you’ll need for a kick-ass home bar. The Great Greenpoint Dive Crawl 2014

Fancy bars and restaurants with all sorts of sexy food and drink (Tørst, Beloved, Nights and Weekends) are all over Greenpoint these days, but let’s face it – sometimes you just want get hammered on a budget, pay homage to the neighborhood’s longtime establishments, or just check out something different and new (or old). Greenpoint definitely has no shortage of dive bars, but where to begin?

This weekend I hung out in some of these dives (a.k.a. “old man” bars) in the neighborhood and got to know them and their clientele a little better. I scoped out the drink specials, watched Jeopardy with the regulars, and relaxed in some sweet backyards. And now I present to you, along with my little rating system, some of the neighborhood’s best kept secrets:

Irene’s Pub (623 Manhattan Ave)

Irene's Pub

Despite being so centrally located, Irene’s is somewhat of a mystery. Perhaps most Greenpointers are unfamiliar with the bar’s philosophy:”it’s happy hour all the time,” which I verified as TRUTH. Irene’s prices are actually equivalent to happy hour deals, all the time – we’re talking $2 drafts and dirt-cheap mixed drinks. I repeat: all day and night long. Continue reading
