It only took a year, but the reports from the CitiStorage fire investigation have been wrested into public view by The Brooklyn Paper. The fire was allegedly sparked by a light fixture, subdued, and then reignited. Kind of weird that department reps maintained their line that the investigation was ongoing, even though investigators signed off on the report on Jan. 8. Continue reading →
Once again, the event where we try to convince the world that guacamole is a food group football is played with your hands and not with your feet is upon us.
On Sunday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. EST, the Super Bowl 50 will pit the Carolina Panthers against the Denver Broncos in an epic battle of a young Jedi facing the evil Emperor … oh wait, nevermind. We would never insult Peyton that way. His skin is looking very fresh and unwrinkled thanks to all those product endorsements. Not as fresh as Cam, but that’s hard.
The spots to cheer on big cats versus wild, wild horses (or avoid them) after the jump.

Thanksgiving has always been a good excuse to pile on some good ole classic American dishes and stuff myself silly until I can’t move. But I’ve always done all the cooking and this year, I just don’t feel like getting my hands dirty with the Turkey baster. So what does a lazy Greenpointer do on one of the best holidays of the year? Spend it at any of these five local spots, walking distance away. Continue reading →
It turns out Greenpoint is becoming a bit of a mecca for craft beer. Whilst the likes of Brouwerij Lane, Tørst and Dirck the Norseman have really put us on the map as a beer destination, less well-known is the fact that Nassau Avenue’s Keg & Lantern have their very own self-described ‘nano-brewery’ and that today marks their one-year anniversary of in-house brewing.
Last year owner Keiran Breen realized that the large basement below the bar was crying out to be put to use, so he placed an ad on Craigslist for an in-house brewer to come on board. He struck gold when he found Patrick Allen, an enthusiastic home-brewer who was ready to take his weekend hobby to the next level. Patrick promptly quit his job as manager of a fine art photographic printing studio, and set about upsizing his home-brewing knowledge to a far more commercial scale. Continue reading →
Now that it’s light in the evenings and actually fairly pleasant out, it’s finally time to contemplate doing fun things again. Just to ease you back into the swing of things, here’s info on three local dinner events that are worth staying out for over the next couple of weeks:
Done and dusted with your tax return? Pre-emptively spend your rebate on this five-course dinner at Dirck the Norseman (who celebrated their 1st Birthday yesterday…happy beer-day Dirck!). The evening starts with a brewery tour to help you work up an appetite, then diners sit down to enjoy five robust courses (menu above) each paired with a different delicious brew from Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. The meat-heavy menu isn’t so great for veggies, but beer-loving carnivores will be in seventh heaven!
So it turns out that there is some kind of massive sports game going on this weekend. Yep, according to the internet, Sunday’s Super Bowl will see the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in an epic battle to become the, um, winners.
Katy Perry will be chipping in with some half time entertainment, in a performance that show director Hamish Hamilton describes as ‘a triumph of bringing lots of people, technology, ideas, creative, scientific and logical minds together’. With any luck this amazing melting pot will result in a solution for world peace…but failing that let’s hope Perry’s outfit at least trends on twitter for a few minutes.
Here’s our round up of where to go in Greenpoint to watch the game…as well as some places you can definitely avoid it…
WHERE TO WATCH THE GAME:
Warsaw (261 Driggs Avenue at Eckford))
The Polish National Home is throwing an Epic Super Bowl Party, with three giant cinemascreens, and stadium sound from their ‘gagillion watt’ rock concert PA.
They’ll be serving up a banquet of pierogies, vodka shots, beer towers, wings, spicy kielbasa, paprika relish hoagies, smothered nachos and savory chili. Tables should be booked in advance here.
Riverstyx(21 Greenpoint Avenue)
The folks at Riverstyx are pulling out all the stops for the occasion and bringing in smoke machines, lasers and LED lights, as well as two big screen TV screens. Cocktails will be served in trophies, alongside buckets of beer. Meanwhile their ‘Game Day’ menu ($6-$12) will include Nachos, Sliders, Jalapeno Poppers, Chicken Fingers, Buffalo Wings, Pizza Shooters, as well as regional specialties representative of the competing teams’ hometowns. Did you enjoy that amazing mulled wine at the Holiday Market? It was made with mulling spices donated by Greenpoint’s favorite spice, seasoning and rub company. Greenpoint Trading Co.’s has just launched a kickstarter campaign. Their $30,000 goal will be to invest in a build-out of their warehouse, more machines for production, more inventory and more staff. With more inventory and manpower they can take on more customers and expand beyond the East Coast.
This Sunday December 14, 2014 from 1-4pm they will be having a fundraiser at Dirck the Norseman (7 No. 15th St). They will be giving away FREE BEER to anyone who donates to their cause. So donate!
This Friday, join Preservation Greenpoint in welcoming the holiday season by reveling in the architecture, charm, and (most importantly) BEER of historic Greenpoint!
For their bar crawl, Preservation Greenpoint will be visiting a combination of classic neighborhood institutions and relative newcomers, including a repurposed auto-body shop and a one-time plastic bag manufacturer (now named after the first European settler in the neighborhood). Two of these bars have gorgeous fireplaces to make sure you keep extra cozy!
Discover new watering holes, brush up on Greenpoint’s historic architecture and current issues, and join your neighbors for a frosty brew!
When: Friday, December 5th, 7pm Where: Starts at Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Avenue). Moves onto The Diamond and Dirck the Norseman. RSVP: [email protected]
