It’s a new year, which means it’s a good time to reset with new career goals and aspirations. If you’re handy with a needle and thread or a paintbrush, you may be in luck—Brooklyn Craft Co. (165 Greenpoint Ave.) is seeking some new instructors.
Per Brooklyn Craft Co: “If you teach crafts / DIY and you’re based in the NYC area, we want to hear from you. We are seeking paid instructors in the following subjects:
Tell us about yourself, including your background in the area you want to teach, and online links to your current work (such as your blog, Etsy shop, Instagram, etc).
A brief description of 1-3 workshops you would like to teach with us, including a description of what you would cover in class and the finished project students would make.”
Even if you don’t like secondhand shops, if you’ve lived in Greenpoint long enough, you probably know about The Thing. The Thing is Greenpoint’s premier purveyor of castoff clothing, dated dishware and random tchotchkes. Oh yeah, and a million records, give or take.
The records are housed primarily in the store’s dank basement, where they live crammed into shelves and milk crates in no certain order. Universally priced at $2 a pop, dedicated diggers may find a gem or two worth much more than that.
Inside The Thing. Downstairs, in fact.
I don’t collect records, but I do collect craft projects, so I headed to the Thing this weekend in search of one. Seeing all those records collecting dust inspired me to try my hand at the DIY record bowls I’d seen on Pinterest for ages now.
After the jump, read how to make your own bowl in five easy steps. Continue reading →
Sometimes art doesn’t imitate life and it’s too bad because the winter wonderland we brought this year’s Greenpointers Holiday Marketwas so beautiful! Miss V put down her Mehndi tools for a few hours, picked up a can of blue spray paint, and revived her street art skills to create a dope backdrop decked out with hanging snowflakes, sprites, and a wintery landscape. The weather outside felt more like a brisk spring day but inside the gorgeous Greenpoint Loft, it was bustling with the holiday spirit and the smell of spices from our mulled wine wafted throughout. Not sure if you’ve noticed but cats are everywhere! Big cats, little cats – they are the new spirit animal of this here Brooklyn life. It’s because they are the coolest – even cooler than hipsters. It’s nothing new; Ancient Egyptians sweat the shit out of cats, too.
16th Century Cat Art
Maybe we idolize them because we know if they had a choice they wouldn’t participate in our fur ball schemes. Did you see this? 500 Years ago cats were depicted wearing futuristic jetpacks in old drawings. I know my cat would NOT like a jetpack, or a tiara.

What about beards?
Tomorrow night (3/12) as part of Scott Chasse’s OMG Webcats art show opening at Dandelion Wine, cats are taking the shape of siamese beardos.
Another glorious cat events around town worthy of your attention (even though your cat would definitely be like, “no thanks loser – I’d rather stay home and puke on your computer cables “) – is Brooklyn Craft Company’s “Cat Lady Craft Night” on 4/5.
We chatted with Brett Bara of Bk Craft Co. about why cats are just too cool for school and everything else. Continue reading →
