This Happened in Greenpoint: Taylor Swift Drag Performance (VIDEO)

I’d heard the name but admittedly didn’t know who Taylor Swift is and somehow managed not to knowingly listen to her music. Are you a fan? Aside from Lena Dunham, main stream pop culture isn’t on Greenpoint’s map, but a show on view at Fowler Project Space titled “Who’s Taylor Swift Anyway?” seeks “to explore our relationship to celebrity through embodiments of the pop-fictional character, Taylor Swift.” Now I know.

At the opening there were paintings and interactive art installations. I instagrammed “D” the dog with a donut (#iamtaylorswift) while cruelly not letting her eat the art. The catchy tunes on repeat were familiar and got stuck in my head. I hate that! The night was capped off with this performance by Chris Tyler, who doesn’t need an introduction. Just watch.

Grand Opening of Succulent Studios Saturday (3/29)

Artwork by Sek3 at Succulent Studios

Greenpoint has a new and HUGE art gallery – Succulent Studios, occupying a 3,000 square foot space on the coveted 5th floor of 67 West St – a landmarked former rope factory on the waterfront. A freight elevator up from our third floor HQ, past Greenpoint Loft and around the bend, I opened the door into a construction zone – a vast, high ceilinged and sun drenched construction zone with a view of the East River, lower Manhattan and a granite store yard below – the kind of space many of us would dream to work or live in.

And, it was Wednesday. The Grand Opening exhibit featuring the works of over 30 big name street artists is this Saturday night.  Continue reading

Ode to Geodes with Lauren Davies at Dose Projects

Artwork by Lauren Davies

As I left the building last Friday to check out a few art shows opening in Greenpoint, a bread crumb trail of postcards with what looked like a giant cracked open pink Sno Ball sculpture led the way to Dose Projects were I had a chat with “California artist living in Cleveland,” Lauren Davies, whose mixed media sculptures are inspired by odd DIY roadside museums where you can buy rocks from outer space.

The show was titled, “The Comfort of Rocks.” Continue reading
