Samantha Hew and Anthony Piliaskas believe in evolving spaces and snacks. From Bembe to 3 Roots, both have successfully sustained businesses while layering the neighborhood with innovative adaptations. Their newest collaboration, Vittles Cafe (94 Franklin St), is a vibrant testament to 9 years of friendship and belief that food should be positive and rooted in love and community.
Nestled at Oak and Franklin, the treats – vittles – deliver scrumptious aromas and flavor. Vegans, omnivores, health nuts, and meat-ers will want to indulge in the mouthwatering menu and caffeine addicts will be delighted by the drinks list. Highlights include Toby’s Estate espresso, egg & cheese on a biscuit, Australian hot milo, cornmeal rolls, Thai vegan banh mi, Barista’s specialty, kaya butter toast and potato curry puffs.
And Greenpointers, fear not! The selection of morning pastries, salads and “sammiches” (lovingly named after Sam by Anthony) are available for breakfast and lunch, keeping in line with the “grab and go” vibe of the cafe. Sam’s go-to is the Viet V ‘sammich (seasoned chicken, carrot daikon slaw, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno, sriracha mayo on ciabatta) and sweet-toother Anthony can’t get enough of his own curated Nutella cream cheese buns.
As longstanding Greenpoint residents, Anthony and Sam are certainly no strangers to change in North Brooklyn. Vittles replaced Cookie Road, after owners Jerry and Anetta decided to return to Poland earlier this year and handed over the keys to Anthony and Sam. Day after day, they focus on the way change inspires and can integrate – not replace – memories of North Brooklyn.
Master of the menu Sam integrated the beloved guava cheese from Cookie Road into layers of pastry puff at Vittles. She adds a delightful surprise – blueberry Earl Grey scones to spanokpita – each week based on feedback from her staff and customer requests. As Anthony notes: “Nobody is anybody’s boss here. Everything is an evolution, we listen to our neighbors and customers every single day because we want to create and collaborate with them.”
Welcome the Vittles family to Greenpoint and get your espresso and sammich on!
Vittles is located at 94 Franklin Street at the corner of Oak Street. They are open seven days a week, 7:30am – 6pm.
