This weekend Bedford Avenue from Metropolitan to North 12th Street will be closed off for a summer music jam, art fest and neighborhood block party! If you are down to volunteer for Northside Art at Williamsburg Walks this Saturday June 10th or Sunday June 11th, you’ll get hooked up with a Northside Festival Badge! And you will be doing good for the community by helping reclaim Bedford Ave as a pedestrian-friendly art space!

Some of you may be old enough to remember the Reagan-era “this is your brain on drugs” TV ad, the one that shows an egg frying in a pan.
I can now personally report to you the effect on the brain of three straight days and nights of manic sun-baked body-slamming and the occasional 3 AM audio epiphany that you will encounter at the Northside Festival music series. To continue the frying egg analogy, my brain at this point, is kind of like a ridiculously tasty three-egg omelette oozing melted cheddar and mushrooms. It’s a happy sensation.
OK, before I go jump a school bus and drive that thing to Tampico to go hurl empty beer cans at a ranchera band playing on a chicken wire-protected stage, I have a final obligation to you my readers to guide you to the best bands playing on this, the final day of music. Continue reading →
We have a spot on Bedford Ave and North 8th Street from 1-4PM for Williamsburg Walks and local artists Jay Miriam and Zev Rector will be making FREE Painted Postcards! You can request that they draw from their own imaginations or have a custom drawing made.
Williamsburg Walks is happening this weekend and will have a bunch of FREE SOD to give away again this year. It will be ready for pick up this Sunday, June 14 on Bedford Ave from North 5th- 7th and North 9th-North 11th.
Arrive around 5:30PM to start packing it up. There will be no thru traffic on Bedford so parking will only be available at one of the cross street intersections.
We’d hate to see good sod go to waste! Let’s make sure it gets reused!
One view of art is that the artist’s role is to create not for themself alone, but for the community they are a member of. This community centered view of art prioritizes the concept of resonance. Something is said to be resonant when it is able to move beyond itself as a point of origin and reverberate deeply throughout its environment. Are you resonant as an artist? Here are a few opportunities for you to let your work reverberate in your Brooklyn community. Continue reading →
Williamsburg Walks begins this weekend, when my dream comes true – an actual NYC street becomes a walking mall for pedestrians with lots of fun and engaging activities that don’t involve dodging buses or flicking off car service lunatics. I have said this before and I will say it again – let’s do this permanently on McGuinness Blvd!
The idea behind this series of car-free Saturday afternoons on Bedford Avenue is for people to use the closure in order to rethink their public space and to celebrate the neighborhood. The event is organized by NAG in conjunction with the NYC DOT as part of their Weekend Walks program.
Williamsburg Walks 2013 will happen on Saturdays – June 8th, June 15th & June 22nd – RAIN OR SHINE!
Bedford Ave will be closed from Metropolitan Ave to N12th. The street closure will run from 1pm to 930pm. Williamsburg Walks programming will run from 3-8pm.
NAG will give away the sod after the events. Volunteers who help roll it out from 12-3pm get first dibs, claiming the amount they will take, and returning at 8pm to haul it away. At 9pm, if there is any sod left, it is full on up for grabs
Email Ryan Kuonen, over at ryan at nag-brooklyn.org, to sign up.
