Pinball Wizards and Streetcar Woes — The Hook-up (1/19)

In the contentious world of elite New York pinball, there can be only one champion. This year, it was a North Brooklyn contest: Greenpoint’s Paragons of Pinball duked it out in the final round against Williamsburg’s Terrorwrists at Sunshine Laundromat (860 Manhattan Avenue). The Terrorwrists took the title.

Pinball is a fast-paced, high stakes enterprise. New York’s urban planning and infrastructural changes are much slower beasts. And so: the Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX), also known as the gentrification express. This is The Streetcar Not Everyone Desires. With more and more funding necessary, but less and less actual money secured for the project, the BQX is stalled behind schedule, and seems, for now, to be more of a pipe-dream than a real possibility.

Speaking of transportation going off the rails, an unoccupied car was found partially submerged in Newtown Creek this morning. As of yet, there is no information on the condition, whereabouts or identity of the driver.

Weekend Music: Catfished by a Drug Smuggler

Spring is a time of renewal. All the little lambs are born in the field >mmmm Easter dinner<. Tulips sprout along the paths in McGolrick. And most importantly, all the good TV shows, like Better Call Saul and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, start up again.

Yes, yes, this is a music post, fine, so for that, I’m also excited about the new places to hear music that have cropped up recently in North Brooklyn.

Weekend Music recommends today the best bets at some of the rookie spots. Continue reading

The Seedy Underbelly of Greenpoint, Plus Lube in a Laundromat — The Hook-Up 3/18

There have been more than a couple shots fired in our neck of the woods over the last week. On Tuesday, two gunmen were apprehended at North 4th & Kent following an armed robbery. Then, on Wednesday, a member of the North Brooklyn Community Group on Facebook said a neighbor witnessed a teenager fire a hand gun at McCarren Skate Park around 5 p.m. before fleeing on a bike.

The seedy underbelly of Greenpoint continues its chorus with a drug bust of a $10-million-per-year operation. Cops seized 400 pounds of marijuana, 1,100 containers of retail-ready marijuana, mushrooms, liquid THC, liquid PCP and liquid HGH from Philip Feng, 36, and Victor Bae, 35.
Northside Music Festival has confirmed its initial lineup. Conor Oberst, making a comeback!
Ready Set, a local set design company, is expanding into 15,000 sq. ft. of additional space at 100 Sutton Street, adjoining its current space at 663 Morgan Avenue.
Sunshine Laundromat — the pinball place — just became a little more well-rounded with its installation of a vending machine full of Plan B, pregnancy tests, and lube. According to the owner, they’re not in earnest about becoming a new family planning hub.

Greenpoint Beer & Ale is fed up with the firkin ignorance of you locals, so they’re turning it into a drinking opportunity this weekend.
The historic Union Baptist Church is due for repairs after its century-plus run in Greenpoint.

Now, you’ll have so many more reasons. Sunshine, in case you haven’t noticed while walking past on your bleary-eyed morning stumble to Upright, has got a brand new bag. Continue reading

77 Yr Old Watch Fixer Gets Evicted From Shop After 26 Years

Two weeks ago Greenpoint resident and local watch repairwoman, Ms. Leokadia Trzaskowska, was sitting at her workbench, like every day for the past 26 years, and had the unimaginable happen. A NYC Marshal stormed into her shop, not get a watch fixed, but to announce that the 77 year old was to leave the premises immediately. With no time to spare, the woman grabbed her purse and watched in confusion as a padlock was put on the door.

For the last 26 years Ms. Trzaskowska has sat in the window of the Sunshine Laundromat tinkering with gears and tiny screws, repairing a lifetime of watches from ending in the up in garbage heaps. All of her specialized tools, her passport, and essentially her life’s work was now being kept under the auspices of a commercial possession.
