In a Battle Against Greenpoint’s Real Estate Investors, Bar Matchless Loses – Tonight’s The Last Night (1/8)

Today is a sad day for Greenpoint as one of its best cultural icons will be closing down for good – but not before one last hurrah tonight (January 8, 2018). After 15 years of being in business in 544 Manhattan Ave, Bar Matchless is unceremoniously shutting its doors after receiving a letter in the mail that the Sheriff is coming this Thursday, January 11th to enforce their eviction.

Free drinks tonight for volunteers who can help move Bar Matchless out. If you are available Tuesday, January 9th and/or Wednesday, January 10th, fill out the form and come say your goodbyes!

There was an outpouring of support for Bar Matchless after we reported that its future was precarious last week. Greenpointers’ responses ranged from anger & frustration to heartbreak & sadness about this loss. Here are a few from over 140 comments on our Instagram post about it: Continue reading

Bar Matchless Resists Closure – For Now

Bar Matchless (photo: Chop Cult)

If you haven’t already heard, the rumors are true. The building where Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave) is in has been sold and they were asked to vacate the premises. But they aren’t going down without a fight and they are still open for business.

The question of how long remains precarious as they have not been able to reach the landlords or new owners about the possibility of staying. For now, Tuesday 2-4-1 drinks, cheap late night food, and epic hangover brunch lives on in what is a Greenpoint institution.

Bar Matchless is one of the last men standing, having survived the death knell of North Brooklyn DIY spots and small performance spaces of yesteryear. Since its inception in 2003, it’s always been in the black and is still a legit thriving successful small business. The only reason it is slated to close is because the current landlord has not renewed the lease and the new owners remain out of touch – literally and figuratively. Continue reading

greenpointbeer_oktoberfest_2016_525px

Greenpoint Beer & Ale (7 North 15th Street) simply couldn’t contain themselves to one Oktoberfest weekend so they decided to celebrate the booziest of holidays all damn month. They’ll kick off this weekend Oct. 8th, with a brilliant lineup of house lagers and pilsners plus a very special guest list from our favorite German purveyors, Shelton Brothers (listed below:) All month they’ll have special beer releases and seasonal food offerings that will propel you mind, soul and liver immediately to November, OH BOY!

Check out their Oktoberfest Guest Beers:

Mahrs Ungespundet Lager, 5.2%, Kellerbier
Their favorite lager on planet earth and very highly regarded. Fresh, perfumy hop aroma. Remarkably smooth, very fresh flavors and a spritzy dry finish with beautiful balance. This is a delicious, appetizing beer and a true taste of Germany. Continue reading

Your Favorite Suds, Finally Portable from Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co.

geb_0489 greenpoint-beer-can-1_greenpoint_brothers-buoyTake it from us: there really is no way to prepare your body for the consumption of alcohol at ten o’clock in the morning. No amount of crack-of-dawn jogging, smoothie making or transcendent meditation will make it any easier to knock back even one sip of a strong brew before your breakfast has begun to digest. We don’t know how we didn’t expect this, showing up to photograph the first-ever canning run at Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. The process, led by Iron Heart Canning was mind blowing enough even without the pre-lunch intoxication.

Far from the beginning of this brewery’s story, this canning is but an exciting new chapter in their long history making and importing wonderful beer. Owner Ed Raven has been in the business of great suds since the 1980s. Not long after getting his start with the Brooklyn Brewery, he began his own importing company, RavenBrands, and opened the Brouwerij Lane beer shop on Greenpoint Avenue in the early 2000s. After Raven opened Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. in 2014, the beer shop began to serve as a pseudo-training ground for young hopefuls who want to work at the brewery–honing their palettes and familiarizing themselves with beers from all over the world. Nerd Alert Trivia Tuesdays at Black Rabbit – By No Means “Someone Else’s Canned Shit”

Black Rabbit Trivia Hosts Casey & RyanThe Black Rabbit Bar (91 Greenpoint Ave) is easily one of the most visually appealing bars in all of Brooklyn–a softly lit, atmospheric wood-paneled den with a narrow, rail car-style interior and a tranquil, leafy backyard. A portrait of the tavern’s namesake, the Rabbit himself (the owner’s Irish grandfather), hangs in a prominent position on the wall. Perhaps the most distinctive feature is the private booths with swinging, hinged double doors, evoking the entrance of a “Wild West” era saloon. This is perhaps a misleading comparison, as bartender and owner Kent Lanier claims there has never been a fight on the premises (something he partly attributes to the purposeful lack of Red Bull or Jagermeister in the pub).

No, on this Tuesday night – and damn near every Tuesday night since 2007 – the only battle is the battle of minds and wills as teams of (up to) 5 compete in the long-running Nerd Alert Trivia, a pub quiz the Village Voice dubbed the Best Trivia in New York last year – not Greenpoint, not the borough – this is the best goddamn game in town. Northern Territory Rooftop Bar Officially Open!

Northern Territory Rooftop View
Skyline View that will have Punters Coming in Droves

Its official: Judging by a weekend of gleaming porcelain limbs sunning themselves in McCarren Park, our long-lost love Springtime has finally returned! Which means it’s now time to start thinking about where we can make the most of these warmer days and nights.

When I popped into Aussie newcomer Northern Territory (12 Franklin Street) on Saturday evening I was happy to learn that their rooftop bar is now fully operational. Continue reading

Pavlova + Rooftop at Greenpoint’s New Bar Northern Territory

New Restaurant on Franklin St: Northern Territory

It may be hard to remember those sweet hot nights of summer but, when they finally roll round, al fresco drinking spots will be high in demand. The small rooftop at Night of Joy is usually my favorite, but the view of the BQE often leaves something to be desired. Berry Park’s roof has a better view and a far larger capacity, but now the team behind the popular drinking mecca is in danger of stealing their own thunder.

Last week the owners of Berry Park opened up Northern Territory (12 Franklin St) a great new bar and restaurant with a huge rooftop over-looking the East River. They are still adding the finishing touches upstairs but assure us the rooftop will be open at the beginning of April, just in time for the appearance of some warmer weather. Continue reading
