Local bar/coffeeshop/workspace/venue Freehold (45 S 3rd St) is bringing a Christmas wish from a 4-year-old girl with cancer to life! Freehold is working with charity organization The Sisters Project to grant little Ruby’s wish for handmade Christmas cards. Today and tomorrow you can drop off a handmade holiday card to Freehold’s front desk, or make one on the spot—they’ll have art supplies on hand. Happy holidays!
Freehold (45 South 3rd St), located in south Williamsburg, is widely known as a freelancer’s oasis to get some work done while having a burger, taking a break to enjoy the large outdoor space and having a beer to close out the day. Or you can hit up Freehold to celebrate your friend’s birthday brunch or during one of their epic Halloween parties. But if you have caught a studio session, you probably know Freehold’s latest hit is as non-traditional music venue. Freehold Studio Sessions have been happening for more than a year, beginning with bands such as St. Lucia, that served as a sort of test to see how the space would work for live music. Once the Freehold folks realized that their space could work well as a music venue, it was important to event director Lydia Mazzolini, creative director Tony Pytleski and the rest of the team to keep bringing in quality bands to give Freeholders (their members) the gift of enjoying a great live show that would be rooted in community. They brought on Joey Garofalo of Beacon Events to book bands, and the rest is recent history. Continue reading
👻 🎃 👾 👹 🍂
Sultry weather falls across the land—yet Halloween hour is close at hand. Creatures crawl in search of blood to terrorize our North Brooklyn ‘hood. And whosoever shall be found without the soul for getting down, must stand and face the shutdown of the L and rot inside Williamsburg’s shell. The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of Newtown Creek’s years. And grizzly ghouls from every tomb are closing in to share your doom. And though you fight to stay alive, your body starts to shiver; for no mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller.

At our Fall Market this past Sunday, the community came together and helped to raise more than $700 for the Hurricane Maria Community Recovery Fund—where 100% of funds support low-income and communities of color relief and rebuilding efforts.
As we reported earlier this week, the former bartender/manager and chef of shuttered bar The Habitat are also looking for some help after their post-Habitat plans to move to Puerto Rico were seriously derailed following the hurricane. Additionally, local salon The Karcher (72 Greenpoint Ave) is collecting used Halloween costumes, and the proceeds from the sales will benefit hurricane victims. As it turns out, there are tons of upcoming events (including two tonight!) to benefit recovery efforts—so here’s even more ways you can donate, have fun and throw back a drink or two!
