GPBA’s new location will have an increased brewing capacity with a 20 barrel system compared to the former 5 barrel system, and they plan to experiment with new brews like blonde lagers in addition to their classic IPA offerings. “Think in terms of a batch of beer, when your grandma made a big batch of spaghetti she made a gallon of sauce at a time, now we’re going to make four gallons of sauce at a time.,” owner Ed Raven said.
“We want to provide beer for the local community, to drink fresh beer, which was an issue for us before when we didn’t have enough beer to make to go around,” Raven said. “Now well be able to fulfill the demand of the local community, but we should be able to take this out regionally around New York state.” Continue reading →
“I’m spending more money than I ever have before on printer paper,” Todd Andrews jokingly tells me. That’s because Annicka (544 Manhattan Ave.), the recently re-opened farm brewery restaurant on a quiet edge of McCarren Park, where Andrews is both management consultant and head chef, has a drinks menu that changes almost every week. But, as far as expenses go, that paper seems to be well worth it.
A unique permit helps to explain Annicka’s frequently modified booze offerings. Ed Raven, Annicka’s owner, also owns Greenpoint Beer & Ale (7 N 15th St.), about a half mile away on Greenpoint’s West side, where he operates under a New York State farm brewery license. This allows him, as a local brewer, to serve his and other New York State produced and labeled beer, wine, cider, and spirits by the glass, at up to five retail locations without another permit. This encourages quite a bit of experimentation at Annicka, where Andrews and his team “have really run with it”, excitedly exploring what’s out there. As we saw in their canning launch party “The canning sequence is nothing short of mesmerizing” and “For the brewers, this challenge is an opportunity to flex their creativity, and concoct some really diverse and interesting creations that keep bringing customers back again and again…”
Thsi time, they’re releasing Flannel ShirtRed IPA and Rabbit Island Pilsner into the wild. Rabbit Island is a beautiful hoppy pilsner brewed exclusively with forever tropical Motueka and Wi-iti hops from New Zealand. Plus it features killer artwork from infamous local artist Paul Richard. Flannel Shirt is our homage to the sticky, piney & eternally hoppy Red IPA’s from the Pacific Northwest. Just like last time this is a super limited run so make plans now to join us for more canned awesomeness than any of us certainly deserve. $4 per can, $16 per 4 pack, $96 per case.

Take it from us: there really is no way to prepare your body for the consumption of alcohol at ten o’clock in the morning. No amount of crack-of-dawn jogging, smoothie making or transcendent meditation will make it any easier to knock back even one sip of a strong brew before your breakfast has begun to digest. We don’t know how we didn’t expect this, showing up to photograph the first-ever canning run at Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. The process, led by Iron Heart Canning was mind blowing enough even without the pre-lunch intoxication.
Far from the beginning of this brewery’s story, this canning is but an exciting new chapter in their long history making and importing wonderful beer. Owner Ed Raven has been in the business of great suds since the 1980s. Not long after getting his start with the Brooklyn Brewery, he began his own importing company, RavenBrands, and opened the Brouwerij Lane beer shop on Greenpoint Avenue in the early 2000s. After Raven opened Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. in 2014, the beer shop began to serve as a pseudo-training ground for young hopefuls who want to work at the brewery–honing their palettes and familiarizing themselves with beers from all over the world. We were excited to attend the Grand Opening reception of Dirck the Norseman this past Thursday and try the in house beer brewed by Erik Olsen and Chris Prout under the name Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. Unsurprisingly, Mayor DiBlasio didn’t make an appearance, but Brooklyn Deputy President Diana Reyna did attend and enjoyed the brews, which we all agreed are impressive – especially for the duos first run. You’ll have to try and let us know what you think.
Highlights of the day included a surprise guest Linda Fulkerson – an ancestor of the first European settler of Greenpoint Dirck the Norseman – who traveled all the way from Kentucky, along with her 8 home schooled kids, and gave a lengthy presentation about her own genealogy along with laminated photos of other notable Dirck ancestors and what sounded like blessings from God (whoever that is.) Ed Raven, of Raven Importing Company and owner of Brouwerij Lane, promised that the new brewery he is opening called Grain Terminal, along with a bar/restaurant called Dirck The Norseman will be – “the most awesome sunset beer drinking spot in Brooklyn.”
