Cue the sad trombone music. Beloved Franklin Street watering hole, t.b.d. (224 Franklin Street) will shutter its doors this Sunday, March 4th. Pour one out for the bar, and of course their epic backyard featuring Greenpoint’s most Instagrammable wall, that—because Greenpointers are trend setters—was painted well before the dawn of Instagram. The bar will have discounted drink prices on wine, beer, and liquor. We’ll see you there for a fond farewell. Doors open at 4 pm.

Say So Long, Farewell To The Drink This Saturday!

It seems like all we’re doing these days is saying goodbye to our favorite bars and restaurants. Throw this one onto the pile and pour one out while drinking it all in at The Drink (228 Manhattan Ave.) this Saturday night from 5pm onward.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the very last party (and days) at The Drink.

For six-and-a-half years this bar has been a place where we celebrated, mourned, gathered in activism, and made friends and chosen family that will last a lifetime. But as the neighborhood changes, so do we, and so Saturday we’re having one last blowout to make (and forget) memories with our chosen community of very special weirdos ❤️

+ DJs Lauren Flax & Lauren Dillard
++ Special Guests
+++ Drink specials galore

Closed: Papacitos

© Max Dworkin (http://Pictured.Tumblr.Com)

What else is new, right? Papacitos (999 Manhattan Ave) is closed – again. We think this time it’s for good.

I talked to two of owner Cody Utzman’s former employees who said that “all the staff at Papacitos was let go” and that owner Cody “changed his cell” and is “no where to be found.” Rumor has it that he owes “thousands upon thousands” in back rent and to suppliers.

While we have been through the closing and reopening of Papacitos in the past, it seems like it will stick this time given that Cody’s other two Greenpoint businesses have also changed hands. Earlier this year Brooklyn Standard (188 Nassau Ave) was taken over by local deli owners who, I was told by a Nassau Ave tipster, will be opening a second location on Grand St “any day now.” And Cafe Royal was reopened a few weeks ago as Cafe Edna (195 Nassau Ave) by new owners who wish to remain anonymous and changed the name in an effort to disassociate it from negatives vibes that may have been attached to Royal.

While she was not available to comment, one of Cody’s Papacitos ex-partners Kat McEldowney’s facebook status read: “Who wants to run a restaurant in Greenpoint? I’m serious.”

Update: A reader just sent us this photo that shows that the Board of Health also paid Papacitos a visit.

Do you think Papacitos will live again? Will you miss it? What do you envision opening in the former Papacitos spot? Another Mexican joint?

Sad times on Franklin St: VPC Closing

One of Greenpoint’s best and proudly gayest bars is closing it’s doors. Over the past few weeks, everyone has been asking: “Is it true that VPC  is closing?” The answer is sadly, yes. Why? Heather, owner, cannot comment. More dialogue from patrons: “What happened?” “That’s BS!” “I love that place!” “This sucks!” “Is it because it’s a gay bar?” “Noise complaints? “It isn’t loud!” “I don’t get it.” “Awful!” “Where am I going to watch drag race?” On and on…

The reality is: VPC’s party is over. Not only was it a great bar, with great cocktails and an awesome staff and crowd, but they supported the community, especially the art and food community…

The memories: VPC was the unofficial headquarters for Bring to Light. Antojitos Mexicanos Saturdays was the best Mexican food in town. There Cara Canella’s led her first Speak Easy Series. Morta Di Fame served rice balls to Greenpoint during it’s first Sicilian Sunday Supper Club. I wrote my check to Justine for over Mama’s “slammin” Mac n’ Cheese. I bought my best sweater at a VPC Vintage Pop-Up. Ugly Art Room’s Balls Out Fundraiser & Food Competition raffled off a cat castration from Greenpoint Vet to a girl with a puppy! Greenpointers was looking forward to making many more messes in Terrarium Class. And Veronica People’s Club was the only way I could get my lezzie friend Maria to visit me in Brooklyn for the Kielbasa party. She lives in Manhattan on the same block as Heather’s, VPC’s sister bar, and drove the waiters insane because she wanted a cocktail off the Heather’s menu. I will greatly miss their strongest espresso, which won a prize in the Greenpointers Espresso Tour.

I am sure everyone has their own great memories at Veronica People’s Club. We need places like this. Places that open their doors and let the little people do their thing, to support the art and food community and have a blast doing it.

Please drop by on Saturday at 2pm for a final farewell Veronica People’s Club!
$4 well drinks, draft, and wine
Plus, Antojitos Mexicanos at 3pm & Self-Portrait Project 2pm-8pm
