This weekend kicks off our local autumn art season. In addition to the Brooklyn Clay Tour providing an array of ceramics-related events (check their calendar for a full listing), art opening receptions of all mediums abound—stay in the ‘hood for sculpture, embroidery, immersive installations, surreal sculptures, and paintings that suspend disbelief.
As part of the Brooklyn Clay Tour, Calico presents a pop-up exhibit of commemorative plates, in conjunction with art collective FPOAFM Studios. “PLATE PARTY will feature over 20 artists whom have chosen their favorite artist or inspirational figure to commemorate on a porcelain plate. Images have been drawn, collaged, painted, illustrated, or etched, then permanently transferred onto a plate through a ceramic decal process or laser etching process.”Continue reading →
On Friday, April 28th, twelve neighborhood exhibition spaces will stay open from 6-9pm for the latest Greenpoint Gallery Night. On their site you can plan your art stroll ahead of time or on the fly, including a custom Google Map, usable in any web browser and the Google Maps App on mobile devices. As always, Greenpoint Gallery Night is free & open to the public, rain or shine.
Why waste your time sitting around at a laundromat when you could be experiencing all that our awesome neighborhood has to offer! Instead of killing time waiting for your jeans to dry, head over to your app store, download the WashClub appand schedule a laundry pickup! WashClub comes right to your door for pickup and drop off—they offer tailoring services, dry cleaning and basic laundry. So there’s no reason you should be spending your precious time doing any of the above when WashClub can tackle it!
So if you want to leave the fluorescent lighting, the heavy bags & bottles of detergent in the past, here’s 10 way-more-fun-than-laundry things you could be doing in Greenpoint:
1. Catch a show at Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave.), and try some of their delicious pierogis over a couple of beers! With some great shows coming up—like Dragonette, The Struts and Austra—there are plenty of options no matter what kind of jams get your soul moving!
2. Get your bowl on over at The Gutter (200 N. 14th Street)! In addition to bowling, they’ve got special events every week, including trivia, and not to mention a full bar for all of your drinking needs! Continue reading →
Michael Hambouz is a multi-disciplinary artist who’s been living as a Greenpoint resident for the last 12 years. Originally from the Midwest, he calls Niles, Michigan, his hometown where he continues to source paper from a local mill called French Paper Co.
In his current solo exhibition at Calico (67 West St, #203), Michael Hambouz is showcasing “Pretty in Pink” – an experimental series of multi-tiered structures, collages, and videos created during a period of personal hardship, with each piece representing the meditations on specific issues that the artist dealt with in his life. By “pink-washing” his 3D lenticular paintings, his work speaks of positive transformation and taking control of negative experiences by reinterpreting them into bright compositions of bold colors and figurative patterns. Two local gallery directors, Lia Post of Fowler Project Space and Scott Chasse of Calico, have teamed up to organize GGN. Both of them love Greenpoint, so GGN is part of their labor of love to shed light on Greenpoint’s exceptional galleries, art organizations, and businesses that feature artwork.
Come meander through tree-lined streets, marvel at the amazing views of Manhattan across the East River, and sample local bars, restaurants, and shops as you follow the map to each participating location in this unique part of Brooklyn.
Check out the participating galleries & businesses HERE. Like the GGN Facebook event HERE. To contact Lia or Scott, send an e-mail to [email protected]
Greenpointers are going places this summer—all of the gallery places, and we’re taking you with us. Who are the people behind the lively GP art scene? How do they like their coffee? Where do they hang out? We’ve got the scoop right here. This week, we walked through the maze that is the old Greenpoint Terminal Building at 67 West Street to Scott Chasse’s gallery and wood shop space on the 2nd floor, called Calico. Continue reading →
There is nothing more one of a kind (and cool) than artwork by Greenpoint artists. There are a TON of art shows – some with VERY affordably priced works – opening in Greenpoint this Friday the 13th…
