Your Guide to Greenpoint Gallery Night (Friday, 4/20)

Greenpoint Gallery Night

Greenpoint Gallery Night is back! From 6-9pm this Friday (April 20th), more than ten local art galleries and art-friendly spaces will open up their doors for a special evening affair. Spaces will be open to the public (for free) for folks to browse interesting local artwork, check out their unique spaces, and usually a lot of them have wine and snacks too. You should try to hit as many of these awesome spaces as you can, but some highlights include:

Real Estate, a combination gallery and real estate office is showing Hyper Opulence, large-scale metallic mixed media paintings by artist Rosalind Tallmadge. (1144 Manhattan Ave)
Greenpoint Hill, which consistently shows unique sculpture artists and is opening Naturalized, an exhibition of new works by artist Carol Joo Lee—brightly-hued sculptural compositions incorporating symbols from immigrant communities. (100 Freeman St)
Dusty Rose Vintage is a vintage clothing warehouse that consistently draws crowds from all over Brooklyn for their unique art events. For Gallery Night they’ll be throwing their 3rd annual 4/20 Pop-Up, with smoking vessels, rolling dishes, munchies and art by Haute Chocolate, Caitlin Rose Sweet, Most Recklessly, Lylynn Pham; tarot readings by Anna Toonk, and live screen printing with Kingsland Printing, and the work of photographer Jordan Tiberio will be on display. (251 Greenpoint Ave)
• Areté, a unique indoor/outdoor space opened at 67 West Street last year. For Greenpoint Gallery Night they’ll be playing host to musical performances until 10pm, including Healing Music for a Troubled World from 8-9pm, where you can expect both experimental noise/jazz music and performance art. (67 West St, #103)
Calico, Greenpoint’s sweetest little gallery, is opening Surfaces, a show of 5 artists curated by Owen James, who had his namesake gallery in the Pencil Factory building for many years and late last year moved it to Manhattan. Expect to see a range of collage, ceramics, encaustic, sculpture, printmaking and painting. (67 West Street, #203)

RSVP on Facebook, and check out the full list of participating galleries and art spaces after the jump.

Poetry + Paintings from the Backwoods of Alabama at Calico on Thursday (3/22)

Calico Gallery, Field For Ballads with Hannah Hill and Hannah Aizenman's work
Calico Gallery, Field For Ballads, showing the work of Hannah Hill and Hannah Aizenman’s work

A few weeks ago, Calico Gallery (67 West Street #203) opened Field For Ballads, an exhibition of works by two Brooklyn women originally from Alabama, painter Hannah Hill and writer Hannah Aizenman (who is Poetry Coordinator for The New Yorker). The exhibit, curated by artist Frank Schellace, pairs several of Hill’s beautiful color changing (!) paintings with Aizenman’s words running down the wall and onto the floor. The room, with a few earth-toned fabric covered stools and a stag fern from Dobbin Street shop Feng Sway, feels like a reading room, with copies of a limited-run book of poetry and images. Shellace’s goal was to give viewers an intimate storytelling experience, transporting them deep into the backwoods and folklore of Alabama from the confines of a small, hip Brooklyn gallery. “The show was conceived with the notion of what it means to be a Southern transplant in Brooklyn,” Hill says.

This Thursday night (March 22nd) at 7pm, the gallery is hosting a reading and artist/curator walkthrough. The show is elegant, philosophical and powerful, and though the work gives impressions of the past the show feels modern and fresh. Thursday’s reading is a fantastic way to fully experience the work at its full intention. Continue reading

by Erik Keithley
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah at Brooklyn Bazaar (Photo: Erik Keithley)

Why waste your time sitting around at a laundromat when you could be experiencing all that our awesome neighborhood has to offer! Instead of killing time waiting for your jeans to dry, head over to your app store, download the WashClub app and schedule a laundry pickup! WashClub comes right to your door for pickup and drop off—they offer tailoring services, dry cleaning and basic laundry. So there’s no reason you should be spending your precious time doing any of the above when WashClub can tackle it!

So if you want to leave the fluorescent lighting, the heavy bags & bottles of detergent in the past, here’s 10 way-more-fun-than-laundry things you could be doing in Greenpoint:

1. Catch a show at Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave.), and try some of their delicious pierogis over a couple of beers! With some great shows coming up—like Dragonette, The Struts and Austra—there are plenty of options no matter what kind of jams get your soul moving!

2. Get your bowl on over at The Gutter (200 N. 14th Street)! In addition to bowling, they’ve got special events every week, including trivia, and not to mention a full bar for all of your drinking needs! Continue reading

Thursday Spotlight: Artist Michael Hambouz

Pretty in Pink exhibition by Michael Hambouz

Michael Hambouz is a multi-disciplinary artist who’s been living as a Greenpoint resident for the last 12 years. Originally from the Midwest, he calls Niles, Michigan, his hometown where he continues to source paper from a local mill called French Paper Co.

In his current solo exhibition at Calico (67 West St, #203), Michael Hambouz is showcasing “Pretty in Pink” – an experimental series of multi-tiered structures, collages, and videos created during a period of personal hardship, with each piece representing the meditations on specific issues that the artist dealt with in his life. By “pink-washing” his 3D lenticular paintings, his work speaks of positive transformation and taking control of negative experiences by reinterpreting them into bright compositions of bold colors and figurative patterns.
