For every neon sign, there is story. For us it’s the story of Jen, who sought out a sign maker for Greenpointers and discovered a dying art. It’s the story of skills passed down from father to son that inspired Jen enough to work on capturing an otherwise lost craft on film.
The Greenpointers neon sign is an artifact of “Gasper & Son” and is the symbolic torch that was passed down when Jen sold Greenpointers – rooted in inspiration with a deep respect for creativity and artistry that serves the local community. It makes an appearance in all of the Greenpointers events and will light up our bar again at the upcoming Summer Market. Continue reading →
March was our floating deadline for our Neon Documentary but in order to get everything just right and to submit the film to some MAJOR film festivals we aren’t rushing it and we plan on doing some more shooting while we continue editing. Continue reading →
Last Friday night we were so excited to light our Greenpointers Neon Sign. Ain’t she a beaut? Thanks to everyone who donated and made this beautifully crafted piece of art a reality. And thanks to Robbie Ingui of Artistic Neon for doing such a badass job. The sign will be on display at our Holiday Market on 12/8/13! Come by a check it out.
Below are updates to our project. We have begun filming, which has been a blast and once completed there will be a lot of editing to do, which is time consuming and costly. If we reach our funding goal, our plan is to hire a professional film editor to work on the film. After working so hard to film this perfectly we want to make sure the final product is edited just as beautifully.
Remember, if we don’t reach the funding goal – we get zero dollars. That would be so sad.
This past week we filmed Fabio, the owner of Ear Wax Records, who recently moved locations from the mini-mall on Bedford Ave to a new shop on No. 9th St in Williamsburg. He hired Robbie Ingui of Artistic Neon to make a neon sign for his shop. The purpose of this interview was to get a perspective from a local businesses owner who chose to get a neon sign for his business and to get it done locally. Fabio was great on camera and had a lot of feedback for us. Plus his neon sign rules! Continue reading →
When we began learning about the Neon Sign Making process from Robbie Ingui at Artistic Neon for our Neon Sign Making Documentary, he showed us how he draws out the sign first, then lay the neon glass over it as he forms the letters. Since the glass is hot when he lays it over the paper it creates burn marks that make the drawing its own unique piece of artwork. Don’t you agree? Continue reading →
We have stickers, magnet, tote bags and tee shirts with this cool neon logo… (Dog not included). We are also sending out Thank You postcards with an original photo from the film, signed by the creators of the documentary – Miguel A. Rodriguez and myself.
We are excited to host exclusive screenings of the documentary and are having a “Lighting Party” at Robbie Ingui’s Neon Shop in Ridgewood. That will be a crazy party and I am making rice balls…
The BEST prize, with only 2 spots left is a 3 Hour Neon Sign Making Workshop with Robbie at his shop!
Thanks in advance for all the support. We cannot wait to make this documentary!
Today we are heading up to the Catskills to meet Robbie’s father, who founded Artistic Neon over 40 years ago and taught Robbie everything he knows about Neon Sign Making. We are loading up into Robbie’s van with his two dogs and our pooch (that should smell great). Maybe we will see some neon fall foliage. Plus, we hear that Robbie’s Mom is going to prepare us some lasagna! Needless to say it should be a fun day. Check out Instagram #greenpointers_neon for some fun shots of our shooting day upstate!
Since we launched our Kickstarter project on Monday we have raised $591 of our $3000 funding goal and we have 22 days left. Please help us fund this project!
It all started when we realized that our sign sucks…
We decided to get a badass NEON sign, which we can take to all of our events and markets, a sign that reflects who we are and what we believe in – local MADE IN NYC craftsmanship – and of course document the process from start to finish with the direction of the talented Miguel A. Rodriguez (my best friend in the entire world!)
Our Neon Sign Documentary will star Robbie Ingui of Artistic Neon, a 2nd generation Neon Sign Maker. This guy is super talented, hilarious and has thee best NY accent ever! Not only will we film him making our sign and teaching us about the process, but we will also interview his father (in upstate NY) and Thomas Rinaldi, who wrote the amazing book New York Neon to learn about the history of Neon Sign Making and how it has created a unique visual landscape here for the past 100 years.
