6 Greenpoint Cafés Serving More Than Your Average Latte

Budin's Secret Licorice Latte

New York has run on coffee since at least 1668, when the first written reference to the drink in America noted that New Yorkers were imbibing a brew made of roasted beans flavored with sugar, or honey and cinnamon. Following the Civil War, our beloved borough became the center of the national coffee trade. By the turn of the 20th century, 86% of the nation’s coffee docked in New York Harbor, and John Arbuckle’s plant on John Street in DUMBO roasted more coffee than any other building in the world.

Today, Brooklynites are pioneering the “third wave” specialty coffee craze, and our local roasters are flavoring their drinks with a lot more than sugar or honey and cinnamon. In the name of investigative journalism, I set out to sample some of that local flavor. In Greenpoint alone, that means turmeric, lavender, licorice and other assorted delights. These are not your average pours and they’ll run you more than a regular coffee, but if you’re looking to splurge on something special, read on for Greenpoint’s most exciting coffee concoctions. Flowers, Peppers & Pizza Herbs at Eagle Street Rooftop Farm

The serene Eagle Street Rooftop Farm  Image: Rooftop Farmer/Instagram

A lot has changed since Broadway Stages decided to “green” the roof of their sound stage at 44 Eagle Street. The owners were in talks with Goode Green when they approached by Annie Novak and Ben Flanner to do something a little bit more than just a green roof. This is how Eagle Street Rooftop Farm was born in 2009. Since then, Broadway Stages has also gone on to create Kingsland Wildflowers while Annie had shepherded the 6,000-square-foot rooftop farm through multiple changes.

Chicago-native Annie didn’t know this is where she’d end up. Upon graduating college, she originally wanted to enter the Peace Corps and work on cacao agriculture in West Africa. Instead, she found herself with an internship at the New York Botanical Garden. She helped oversee the two-acre Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden and is now the manager of their Edible Academy in addition to her role here. Continue reading

Lunch at Archestratus   Image via Archestratus Instagram

Archestratus (160 Huron St) is definitely the spot in the neighborhood for picking up cookbooks (new and used), food magazines, cute stationary, and gourmet food stuffs. The store has been open for about a year-and-a-half now and has become one of the “the spots” in the neighborhood, most likely because the owner, Paige Lipari, hosts various community events every month. But Archestratus isn’t just good for kitchen things and crafts night, the back café is one of the best places to chill out with a book, or to stop by for lunch. Yes, lunch! Continue reading

Sunday will be the one-year anniversary of Archestratus, Greenpoint’s very own cookbook shop/cafe/place of food-related treats and events at 160 Huron Street. Archestratus will be celebrating by having a day of comfort: they will be making and giving out spaghetti for free from 11am-6pm. Oh, and better yet: they’ll be playing spaghetti westerns (another source of comfort for owner Paige Lipari and her employees).

“It will be a day to say thank you to everyone who’s supported us this past year,” said Paige. “Sunday will be all about coziness and gratitude.”
