At about 12:30 am Saturday morning, NYPD responded to a call of a cyclist hit by a driver on Franklin Street at Noble Street. The 27-year-old male cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and the accident has been labeled a hit-and-run. According to Gothamist, “An initial investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that the cyclist was biking on Franklin Street when he was struck by the garbage truck driver who was moving south on Franklin. The garbage truck driver then left the scene after striking the cyclist.” The police are still looking for the truck which is described as a green and white sanitation truck with yellow writing.
By Saturday, neighbors had learned that the deceased was a member of the community. Neftaly Ramirez was a beloved employee at Paulie Gee’s and had been biking to his home in Alphabet City after a shift at the restaurant. Paulie Gee’s was closed in mourning Saturday. 110 Franklin Street is the future home of Paulie Gee’s slice shop.
Local residents are concerned after a recent uptick in traffic accidents and injuries. A 14-year-old boy was struck by an out of control driver on Manhattan Avenue and seriously injured last week. Two weeks ago, an elderly man was killed on Grand Street following a hit and run. And there was a report a few weeks back of a four-year-old getting struck by a box truck near McGolrick Park—we’ve heard the boy is ok. According to the NYPD, in the 94th Precinct collisions are up by 27%, and collisions with injuries are up 122% over last year, and our year has just begun. Neighbors have decided to mobilize and are meeting tonight (Jan. 25) at Greenpoint Beer & Ale (7 N 15th St.) from 7-9pm to discuss traffic safety. Check out the Facebook event here.
Around 7:30pm last night a B48 driver had what NBC is describing as a “medical emergency” that caused the driver to lose control of the bus, which crashed into over 15 parked cars along Nassau Ave near Kingsland Ave in Greenpoint.
Instagrammer @tonyluib’s feed this morning described his medical emergency as a “seizure” and NBC reported that the driver along with 6 bus passengers were taken to Woodhull for treatment of their injuries.
Yesterday at 4pm (3/9) Jorge Rios, 47, was riding his motorcycle northbound on Manahattan Ave when he hit a car near Green Street. He passed away at Bellevue shortly after. The driver of the vehicle is not expected to face charges, according to the Daily News. Rios was from Queens.
Unfortunately, we have another tragic traffic death to report in the neighborhood. At 1:30am on Sunday (3/2), 21-year-old Marisol Martinez was struck and killed by an MTA bus at the corner of Union and Meeker in Williamsburg. She was walking south on Union Ave when she was hit by the Q59, which was making a left turn on Meeker. Continue reading →
We Greenpointers absolutely love riding on the East River Ferry, but what happened this morning around 9am at the India St pier is very unsettling.
The Daily News reported that after commuters had crossed the ramp and were safely on the ferry, the ramp detached and plunged into an icy cold East River. Needless to say, we are thankful no one was injured, but they were understandably pretty freaked out.
Service is suspended at this time and an investigation into WTF happened is happening. More photos after the jump! Continue reading →
It is with extreme sadness that we report that 32 year old Nicole Detweiler was killed last night on McGuinness Blvd and Nassau Ave in Greenpoint after being struck by two vehicles, a BMW and a box truck. The driver of the truck was arrested for driving without a license.
Update #3: According to DNAinfo, Christopher Meyer was NOT the victim of a hit and run because, “the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad later found that Meyer fell under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway when his bike’s front tire hit a curb, throwing him to the ground.”
Update #2: There is video footage from The Brooklyn Kitchen which shows Christopher hitting the curb before crashing into the northbound lane, according to Gothamist, but NYPD has not yet commented on the investigation.

It is sad to report that early this morning a 32 year old man was hit on Meeker Ave between Frost and Manhattan Ave and died from injuries to his head, according to Gothamist. The driver fled the scene and the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, do the right thing and call 911.
It’s mind boggling that someone could hit another human being with their car and drive away. Our hearts and with the family of the victim during this terrible time.
