Greenpoint Cheese + Meat

Picnic season is here! And, just in the nick of time, brand new store Greenpoint Cheese + Meat (192 Driggs Ave) has flung open its doors to provide us with a dazzling array of treats perfect for enjoying in the park on a lazy summer afternoon.

The store is run by friends and business partners Ursula O’Hara and Jessica Mark and, as the name suggests, they’re focusing mainly on specialist cheeses and cured meats (along with some exceptionally lovely Italian olives).

Harbison samples...hard to resist!

Among the mouth-watering American cheese selection lies a robust Humboldt Fog (goat) from Cypress Grove, a Bohemian Blue (sheep) from Hidden Springs and gorgeous whole wheels of Harbison (cow) from Jasper Hill, with an almost liquid centre perfect for smearing over a hunk of crusty Bakeri baguette (also on sale) which they collect warm and fresh from the oven each morning.

Putting the Meat into Greenpoint Cheese + Meat

As well as serving up individual portions of cheese, they also offer a fantastic ‘cheese board for one’, whose content changes regularly. When I popped in on Saturday it consisted of three different cheeses (Bayley Hazen Blue/ Jasper Hill Alpha Tolman /Ouleot), honey, fig jam, crackers and almonds…which, at $12, seemed to be a pretty good deal. A daily sandwich special was Salame Toscana, Alpha Tolman, Herb Mustard & Local Greens on Bakeri Sourdough.

Salty Peanut Brittle Exclusive to Greenpoint Cheese + Meat

Other goodies on the shelves have a strong local bias and include Brooklyn’s McClures Pickles, Z Crackers, Anarchy in a Jar jams and mustards, and Salty Peanut Brittle from Morning Dove Bakery, made and packaged exclusively for Greenpoint Cheese + Meat. Alongside the food items are sturdy GP Cheese and Meat tote bags, aprons by Franklin Street’s Kill Devil Hill, and desirable cheeseboards and slates.

The shop itself is super-cute, decked out with reclaimed wood panelling, racing green walls and shiny white tiles, and has the friendly community atmosphere of an old-school grocer. Jessica and Ursula are lovely hosts and everyone who comes into the store is clearly delighted to discover such a great new addition to the neighborhood. Here’s to a Greenpoint summer of cheese!

Greenpoint Cheese + Meat is at 192 Driggs Avenue (between Newell and Diamond Streets). Hours are currently 12-7pm, Tuesday-Sunday (subject to change depending on demand).
