I first met Marina Aris two years ago when she invited me to take part in Indie Writers Day at the Greenpoint Library. Marina immediately impressed me not only with her in-depth knowledge about independent publishing, but more with her warmth and amazing enthusiasm about independent publishing. Her eagerness to help others realize their vision of successfully self-publishing their stories stood out. I participated again this year at Indie Day and saw that Marina was making major steps to create a Greenpoint writers center. Interested in writing? Then Marina’s story of how she created the Brooklyn Writers Project should interest you. Continue reading

Charles Bukowski once said, “writing about a writer’s block is better than not writing at all.” For the writerly types, writers block is no joke, but chances are you’d like to tell the world about something more compelling than writers block. If you often put pen to paper or hands to keyboard to hone your craft but could use a little guidance and structure to help complete a project, this workshop series might be for you. Local writers group WriteBrooklyn is launching workshops in Greenpoint next month, at 988 Manhattan Ave—an elegantly designed creative space. The 8-week workshops are taught by experienced filmmakers, writers and poets, range from Screenplays to Nonfiction, Poetry and Fiction, and meet on designated evenings. Each of the workshops will set you back $450, but they’ve made room for two scholarships per workshop (which means the lucky recipients attend for free). Check out the list of workshops and instructors here. Continue reading

One view of art is that the artist’s role is to create not for themself alone, but for the community they are a member of. This community centered view of art prioritizes the concept of resonance. Something is said to be resonant when it is able to move beyond itself as a point of origin and reverberate deeply throughout its environment. Are you resonant as an artist? Here are a few opportunities for you to let your work reverberate in your Brooklyn community. Continue reading

First, I’d like to welcome aboard Tony Luib, who has been hired as a Managing Editor for Greenpointers.com! His organization skills are pretty insane. And you all know Victoria, right? She is now working exclusively on our events, since she kicks major butt producing those markets we all love. The team is growing!
I’d also like to give you an update on the Writer’s Fund. Well, we did it! We are now paying contributors for content on Greenpointers.com. It really feels good to send out those checks.
When you read “This article made possible by a donation to our Writer’s Fund by (blank)” that means a writer is getting paid for the story!
We are also raising money at our events, too. Saint Vitus donated $1 from every drink from the last comedy show and $5 from every supper at our next Sunday Supper will go to the Writer’s Fund, too!
I got giddy when new contributor Maria S (@msforpm) tweeted, “Just received my first ever paycheck for writing something. Thanks so much, @greenpointers”
Heart melting! These are the opportunities we can give to creative people in Greenpoint!
It makes me so proud of how supportive the local businesses and our readers are of the Greenpoint community. Direct donations from businesses, along with the recent raffle and even donations from readers like “Greenpoint Area Guy” who wrote, “I’ve been casually reading Greenpointers for a while, and figured I’d best put my money where my mouse clicks,” has funded over $900 in posts.
Our goal is $5000 for the year… (to pay local writers $20/post for 3-4 posts/week) – so we have a ways to go…
Please consider making a donation in any amount to our Writer’s Fund. We appreciate your support and readership very much!
