The Cutest Flower Shop In North Brooklyn: The Little Glass Slipper

The Little Glass Slipper teems with flowers this spring in Greenpoint.

There’s something about the flower arrangements at Greenpoint’s The Little Glass Slipper (200 Franklin St). It could be that shop owner, Cary Pereyra-Imbert, takes great care in selecting the flowers she uses, or that the shop itself serves as a small oasis among the condo construction surrounding the neighborhood. Either way, you always leave feeling like you’ve gotten a special treat.  Continue reading

Weekend Music: Catfished by a Drug Smuggler

Spring is a time of renewal. All the little lambs are born in the field >mmmm Easter dinner<. Tulips sprout along the paths in McGolrick. And most importantly, all the good TV shows, like Better Call Saul and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, start up again.

Yes, yes, this is a music post, fine, so for that, I’m also excited about the new places to hear music that have cropped up recently in North Brooklyn.

Weekend Music recommends today the best bets at some of the rookie spots. Continue reading

Recipes Gone Wild: Duke’s Spring Cocktail, Le Rana

Happy Friday! Have you looked at your superfluous (but super cool-looking) wall of international clocks lately? Because it’s 5 o’ clock in Paris, comprenez-vous? The Manhattan Cocktail Classic, NYC’s celebration of all things boozy and bibulous, starts next week (I’ll drink to that) and there will even be a bit of Brooklyn representin’ on this side of the river. New York Distilling Company (located at 79 Richardson in Williamsburg), will be hosting a guinguettes-inspired, Parisienne-themed brunch at their distillery on Saturday, May 10, hosted by Allen Katz. But all brunches aside, why not cheers to the freakin’ weekend tonight by stirring up some lovely, springy cocktails chez vous? I asked Patrick Dacy, of Greenpoint’s own Duke’s Liquor Box, on Franklin, what sort of flavors he’s been into lately, and he sent over the specs for a gorgeous, little libation he’s deemed “Le Rana”— a nod to its mingling of French and Mexican spirits. Notes of wood, smoke, ripe fruit, and bitter quinine are brightened up with fresh citrus juice and a splash of crisp ginger beer. Allons-y! Vamos! Continue reading

Spring Vintage Fest From Dusty Rose Tomorrow! (4/27)

We’ve missed Dusty Rose Vintage ever since they closed down their warehouse (they are still in the process of waiting for a new space), but lucky for us, the vintage wholesalers are back in action this weekend with a curated brunch/shopping day party in collaboration with Pretty In Thrift. Very appropriately, their rallying cry is “Thank F*ck it’s Finally Spring.” Pro Stylist, Stephanie Mohebban, will be picking out some choice warm-weather clothes for the occasion and we’re told there will be drinks.

Pretty in Dusty Rose is happening on Sunday 4/27 from 12-5pm @ Brooklyn Safehouse (120 Franklin St). RSVP here!

Recipes Gone Wild: Yuka Miyata’s Pork Hiya-Shabu

This week’s lesson in language, and cooking for that matter, comes from Greenpointer’s own Yuka Miyata, who you may know from our Greenpointer’s markets (like the Spring Market happening next week Sunday! Y’all should come by for food, fun, crafts, and more). I asked Yuka what she likes to cook when the weather gets warmer (and veggie-roasting season has ended), and she answered my call with this beauty of a recipe for Hiya-Shabu— a chilled take on shabu-shabu made with thinly-sliced pork, infused with refreshing ginger and scallion, sprinkled with shiso leaves and drizzled with a soy-sesame-ginger-herb sauce. Whoa… Yum! Continue reading

Beastanetics Boot Camp: the Muffin Top/ Beer Gut Antidote

(sponsored)

Spring is here (we promise) and since it’s finally going to get warmer, it’s time to maximize outdoor time. Same goes for working out, which is just one of the reasons why Beastanetics is so great. We happen to live next to a pretty sweet track and field and it’s time to take advantage! We’re talking FRESH AIR, people. Remember what that feels like?

Beastanetics is a 6-week, 12-session program run entirely in McCarren Park, and rest assured, it will have you looking positively fierce by Summer. Led by Tim Haft and his knowledgeable, supportive, and welcoming staff, the intro training sesh is a steal at $144 (includes all 12 sessions). That’s cheaper than an indoor gym membership where you’ll wait an hour to run on a treadmill in a sweaty florescent box (can you tell how much I love gyms?).

The next session begins Monday, April 14 and Greenpointers has teamed up with Beastanetics to give first-time students 10% off the registration fee with code FIRSTTIMEBEAST. Virgin Beasts can also try a one-time free trial; drop-in classes (space permitting) are $15.  Register here!  Continue reading
