These North Brooklyn Galleries And Artists Repped Our Hood At Last Weekend’s Manhattan Art Fairs

Dusty Rose Vintage + Noah Scalin

This weekend, Manhattan was bombarded with contemporary art: in addition to The Armory Show, we had SCOPE, Volta, Spring/Break, Art on Paper, and NADA (and probably others I’ve forgotten). Greenpointers staff were able to attend most of them, and we wanted to give a shoutout to our local artists and galleries who participated! You all are awesome.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Local vintage shop Dusty Rose Vintage (251 Greenpoint Ave.) collaborated with Noah Scalin at Spring/Break to create a large fabric portrait of Helen Keller.

WashClub Presents: 10 Things To Do In Greenpoint Instead Of Your Laundry

by Erik Keithley
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah at Brooklyn Bazaar (Photo: Erik Keithley)

Why waste your time sitting around at a laundromat when you could be experiencing all that our awesome neighborhood has to offer! Instead of killing time waiting for your jeans to dry, head over to your app store, download the WashClub app and schedule a laundry pickup! WashClub comes right to your door for pickup and drop off—they offer tailoring services, dry cleaning and basic laundry. So there’s no reason you should be spending your precious time doing any of the above when WashClub can tackle it!

So if you want to leave the fluorescent lighting, the heavy bags & bottles of detergent in the past, here’s 10 way-more-fun-than-laundry things you could be doing in Greenpoint:

1. Catch a show at Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave.), and try some of their delicious pierogis over a couple of beers! With some great shows coming up—like Dragonette, The Struts and Austra—there are plenty of options no matter what kind of jams get your soul moving!

2. Get your bowl on over at The Gutter (200 N. 14th Street)! In addition to bowling, they’ve got special events every week, including trivia, and not to mention a full bar for all of your drinking needs! Continue reading

There are exactly 10 cool things happening and around Greenpoint this weekend. Eleven if you count Bill Murray bartending at 21 Greenpoint, but that doesn’t count, does it? There are at least 10 cool things happening this weekend.

I double dog dare you to get to more than three of these events. Choose wisely!

See you in the streets,

Andy

Karen Marston – Demeter’s Wrath
at Owen James Gallery

Karen Marston is a painter focused on the fundamental contradiction of natural phenomena, the pairing of powerful terror with majestic beauty. Her large-scale oil paintings portray this strength at its extremes: tornadoes, forest fires, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions. While many of these events have occurred naturally throughout the history of the Earth, they have also been exacerbated by the influence humans have on the environment.

Opening Reception: Friday May 20th, 6-8 PM

Art Receptions in Greenpoint This Weekend: April 8-9

"Rye" by Walter Robinson at Owen James Gallery
“Rye” by Walter Robinson at Owen James Gallery

This evening, Friday, April 8th, stop by Owen James Gallery for the opening reception of Charles Bukowski & Walter Robinson: There’s A Bluebird In My Heart

This selectively curated exhibition brings together the poetry of Charles Bukowski and the paintings and drawings of Walter Robinson. Bukowski is well known for his poetry and verse, in which he pulls no punches in his depictions of a life filled with drink, defeat and destruction. Robinson is known for his lushly painted and ironic critiques of mass culture, consumption and desire. By focusing on the artist’s “Backpage Ads” and “Still Life” series, complimented by Bukowski’s poem “The Bluebird”, a new appreciation of Robinson’s darker undertones is achieved.

RSVP here at 61 Greenpoint Ave #315

Last Friday marked the 18th Greenpoint Gallery Night, hosted by Scott Chasse (Calico) and Owen Houhoulis (Owen James Gallery) who voluntarily organized this informal directory of art spaces and organizations. It’s a night to roam the neighborhood, visiting new and familiar places, and meeting some of the talented creatives who make Greenpoint the incredible neighborhood it is.

Here’s a short recap of the work I was able to see. Hope to see you at the next one! Continue reading
