Weekend Music: Day Job, Night Vision (5/20 – 5/23)

Why do you work all day at a job that is not your true calling?

For cash, of course. Or maybe stock options.

My day job pays the bills, but I also get to go to fun places sometimes for it too. Got to go to Alabama once.

It was great. “Where’s the best bar in this town?” I asked someone in Eufala, AL.

“Airport Lounge. They got shacks in the back.” In case you are not up on your South, that means ladies of the night are available.

Not my thing, but heading for Japan on Sunday, bizness class. Before my next brush with the picaresque, here’s the weekend music calendar, with a bonus entry for Monday night to help transition you back to the work week. Continue reading

Films on the Green Returns to Transmitter Park This Summer

Crowd watching a film in Transmitter Park, last summer.

One of the area’s brightest summer events, Films on the Green will be returning to Greenpoint’s WNYC Transmitter Park to project two films ‘en plein air’.

An initiative of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US, the FACE Foundation and the City of New York Parks & Recreation, Films on the Green Films is unique among the myriad of free movie screenings attracting cineastes to NY green spaces every summer, as each year the series presents a free and fresh sampling of French films around a given theme.

This year, as part of the Tandem Paris-New York, a cultural partnership between the cities of New York and Paris including a music festival, film, art, and other events, running between June and October 2016, Films on the Green presents classic and contemporary films that, “present the diversity of Paris, its inhabitants, landscapes, and cultures”.

Greenpointers can view two classic French films projected alongside an unmatched East River view of Manhattan, when Luc Besson’s ‘Subway’ screens June 24th and François Truffaut’s ‘400 Blows’ on July 1st. Continue reading

Bring Your Moves Greenpoint! McCarren Rink Opens Today! (11/15)

Doing an image search for “ice dancing” or “figure skating” makes me realize what honey badgers these people are. I won’t even mention the obvious. Sure they defy gravity and death with their moves, but those outfits make me wonder whether they would actually eat a cobra, fall asleep from the venom, then wake up and continue eating. They clearly don’t give a fuck.

Alls I am saying Greenpoint, is when you practice your camel spin you better be wearing some sequins…

And now you don’t need to go all the way to wherever there is an ice skating rink outside of Brooklyn because McCarren Park Rink opens today!

It will will be open through January, seven days per week from 11am-10pm. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors/student and $4 for kids. Skate rentals are $5

Ice dance or die.

Start your summer off properly with BBQ and Cocktails at The Richardson!

This Sunday, June 9th, from 2-6PM, The Richarson (451 Graham Ave) is partnering with Whistle Pig Distillery, offering tastes of their great spirits.

Chef Ryall Hyatt has created an inspired Lamb and Beef Kofta to pair with the Rye. The Kofta (think of it as a spiced, skewered meatball) will be grilled then served with a Rye-infused honey sauce and a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

For only $10 you can try them both, or, order a la carte for $6 each.

Come early as supplies of Kofta are limited!

The party is over folks; my landlord has taken away one of my simplest pleasures, watching and listening to the birds who grace my feeder daily and keep my hyperactive cat “Bean” out of trouble.

Remember this music video I made to the house finches? There won’t be any more of those.

Today two Gray CatBirds (Dumetella carolinensisvisited. They are really beautiful, all matte grey, with a reddish underside, a long tail and little black hat on their head. Their call sounds like a cat and they were going nuts over the suet.

Then I heard repeated banging on my door. It was my landlord. “No birdfeeder!”

I should have acted like a catbird; according to Wiki, they “are not afraid of predators and respond to them aggressively by flashing their wings and tails and by making their signature mew sounds. They are also known to even attack and peck predators that come too near their nests.”
