In January, Assemblyman Lentol announced a temporary suspension of alternate side parking rules on film shoot days, but that hasn’t stopped film crews from competing for space with residents (hearsay is that the production crew of “Tiara” blocked off a G Train entrance during rush hour). Well, if you ever wanted a quantifiable look at just how movie-famous our neighborhood is, here’s an interactive map.
 
Subway slashings have officially landed on the G Line (well, it happened once, but still). Now, police are looking to amp up NYPD presence on the trains at night.
 
You may have heard about plans to reevaluate the Meeker Avenue crossing, but the rather congested North Brooklyn is going to be the subject of a larger, more comprehensive transportation study.

Spotlight on Half Gallery Director Erin Goldberger

On the Friday night after Christmas, Half Gallery director Erin Goldberger could be found at an artists’ studio in Greenpoint, where a few friends—photographers, musicians, writers—gathered in the kitchen over wine and an assortment of Moe’s Doughs donuts. A Francoise Hardy song was playing off a cell phone connected to a record player with an amplifier, and Erin’s laugh floated above the music. She was re-telling family stories she had just learned over the holidays about her Sicilian great-grandparents, who immigrated to New York at the turn of the last century (her paternal grandparents arrived in New Jersey from Poland after the Second World War).

The stories were funny, although this isn’t the first time that I had seen Erin captivate a small audience. She can recall names, memories, and obscure details at the drop of a hat, and delivers her sentences like an expert pool player: delicately on one shot, sharply on the other, and packed with dry wit on the next. New ‘Moe’s Doughs’ Brings the Croissant Donut to Greenpoint

Important Food News Flash: As of last Friday, Greenpoint got itself a second donut shop. Yep, that’s right, after many years of plain sailing, Peter Pan has finally got some competition!

Moe’s Doughs Donut Shop (126 Nassau Ave), situated at the corner of McGuinness, is a family-run operation headed by Egyptian-born owner Mohamed Saleh, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 25 years. Continue reading
