Are you an armchair urban planner? Do you have ideas about how to make our community more livable? Have you ever crossed under the BQE and thought, “there’s more to life than this!!!!”? Well, it’s your chance to make your voice heard. The NYC Department of Transportation is soliciting input from the public about how to reimagine the stretch of Meeker Avenue that runs under the BQE from Metropolitan Avenue to Varick Avenue.
Today, Meeker Avenue is best known for its abandoned cars and under-utilized space, but City Council members Stephen Levin and Antonio Reynoso, along with Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol and State Senator Martin Dilan hope to improve the roadway by “increas[ing] street safety, [improving] neighborhood bike connections, including access to the Kosciuszko Bridge path, and activat[ing] the space under the BQE.”
DOT street ambassadors for the project conducted community outreach over the summer at Jaime Campiz Playground, Marci Triangle, and at the intersection of Meeker and Graham Avenues. The results of their pedestrian survey found residents are most interested in public spaces or plazas under the BQE, followed closely by greening, lighting, bicycle facilities and art, with a smaller percentage of people hoping for recreation and concessions under the BQE. Because we’re all natural skeptics, we’ll maintain the premise that no meek shall cross the pedestrian thoroughfare at Meeker Avenue. Then again, things in that area might get a little friendlier in 2016.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) will be making a few important new safety proposals to improve conditions at the pedestrian crossing, which include shorter crosswalks, wider sidewalks, improved signal timing, and clear lane designations. Continue reading

It’s 1996 and my surprise 21st birthday party is being thrown by my Dad at Teddy’s. My Dad and his best friend who’s like an uncle to me have been hanging there since Partners closed. It was a great party. Afterwards, a few of us went to JD’s on Meeker, which is now Boulevard Tavern.
That night one of the most horrific things my eyes had ever seen happened. I went into the ladies room to find my overweight and seriously unfortunate looking ex-roommate bent over the sink with my uncle’s tongue in her mouth. To this day the abuse he received from my father and I is nothing shy of torturous. It’s a small price for him to pay considering I have that vile picture in my head that will just never leave.
And damn them both for causing me to never enter JD’s or now The Boulevard Tavern because of their shenanigans.
But that should not affect you, dear reader, from enjoying the fact that their kitchen is now open and open late. And they’re also doing a toy drive.
