The Karcher is Supporting Trans Rights by Offering Non-Gendered Haircuts

Nackie Karcher and Madeline Jacobs, who are the Owner and Manager of local salon The Karcher (72 Greenpoint Avenue) have been talking about showing their support for women as well as the LGBTQ community for several months. “Since November and the election we’d been thinking about what can we do. We had pre-printed postcards for people to write their representatives sitting up at the desk for a while. We closed the day of the women’s march. And we’ve been thinking about ways we can use the space, for having community engagement. Being a queer-identified person myself… what can we do to make people feel accepted?” Madeline says.

Yesterday, the salon announced via its Instagram account that they would be offering Non-Gendered haircuts, stating, “We now offer a Non-Gendered Cut service option when booking on our website. We recognize that not everyone fits the commonly used gender binary service options and we want to make everyone feel welcome in our salon.” It was no coincidence that earlier in the day, President Trump tweeted, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.” On its Instagram post, the salon continued, “It’s a small action, but in light of today’s attack, we want to #resist how we can. You are welcome here. #transrightsarehumanrights”. Calling all Volunteers! N. Brooklyn’s PRIDE Festival Needs Our Help!

PRIDE_Animation

Hey hey Greenpointers! Have you got your bells on yet? If not, you better do it soon because Williamsburg’s  first ever Gay Pride Festival is popping this Saturday, June 20th, and trust us you’re not going to  want to miss this event!

A couple of weeks back we let you all know many people in the hood thought it was high time North Brooklyn had their own gay affair to remember. A who’s who of list of awesome local businesses have stepped up to the plate and are hard at work behind the scenes to make this Saturday’s event a raging success.

But as a media sponsor of the North Brooklyn’s Gay Pride Festival, we here at Greenpointers would be remiss if we didn’t let our kind readers know, this event is in desperate need of our help.

Right now, at this very moment, festival organizers are on the hunt for volunteers. Whether you are straight or gay, lesbian or asexual, it doesn’t matter. All they need are kind souls willing to spare a few hours to help make Saturday’s festival a success.

As of now event organizers are looking for help in the following areas:

  • Setting up and breaking down tables before and after the event
  • Be a point person during the festival and help answer questions
  • Help selling various merchandise

If you have a free set of hands and are willing to donate a few hours to make this an insanely awesome event, organizers would love to hear from you.

Shoot an email to [email protected]  for further details.

For all other information about the North Brooklyn Pride Festival, including times for kid’s activities, where to indulge in adult libations, or simply to check out what cool things will be happening  this Saturday June 20th, on North 11th Street  visit http://www.northbrooklynpridefest.com/

See you all there!

Human Rights Campaign: This Week’s Market Cause

Every week at the Greenpoint McCarren Greenmarket, aside from dropping off compost and textiles and buying local seasonal vegetables you have the opportunity to meet a representative from a cause who will give you information and ask for a donation.

Jon is especially skilled at getting roped in while I unload the compost. We are monthly donors to Environment NY, who is fighting fracking in NY State, definitely worth it.

This week we met a nice person from Human Rights Campaign (HRC) which is the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. That is a cause we can get behind.

She explained that in 29 states you can be fired for being gay and in NY you can be fired for being transgender. Definitely not cool.

Count us in!

I especially appreciate their equality symbol logo but recommended they go a step further and make it a greater than sign.

Read more about HRC here.

Are you lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender living in Greenpoint or North Brooklyn? We’d love to talk to you about your experiences.
