Sensory Deprivation Spa, Vessel Floats, Opens in Greenpoint

Isolating may be the overarching theme of 2020, and a new local business wants to help neighbors relax alone. Vessel Floats (101 West St.) is a spa specializing in sensory deprivation, isolation tanks. Each tank contains 1.5 tons of heated saltwater, so humans can easily float on top of it. The goal is for floaters to be able to completely unwind, feeling weightless without any external distractions.

A regular floating practice is said to help decrease anxiety, depression, lower cortisol levels (stress hormone), improve sleep, and be therapeutic in several more ways.

Floaters at Vessel have the option of a traditional session, which is completely devoid of light and sound, or Vessel Floats’ more structured audio journeys, which include sound baths and guided meditations. Controls inside the tank allow floaters to adjust the soft lights in the soundproof tanks. The tanks are full rooms with seven and a half foot tall ceilings, unlike the floating pods popularized online. The water itself is less than a foot deep, and it’s also safe to doze off while you float in the 93.5 degree Farenheit pool.

After a 60-minute floating session, guests can shower off, unwind in Vessel’s 750-square-foot, socially-distanced lobby or enjoy the spa’s outdoor seating with a gratis selection of coffees, teas, and more. Parties of up to four people can simultaneously book floating sessions, so they can unwind together before and after the solo experiences. All spaces are currently disinfected for COVID-19 protocol. Rule of Thirds Brings Innovative Japanese Cuisine to a/d/o Space

A new 85-seat restaurant inside of the a/d/o co-working space is already drawing large crowds and captures the innovative energy of the neighborhood with sharable Japanese-inspired dishes that are surprisingly capable of satisfying all dietary restrictions.

Rule of Thirds (171 Banker St.) opened last month to high anticipation replacing the traditional Scandinavian restaurant Norman, which closed in March 2019.

A partnership was formed last summer between alumni of popular Williamsburg restaurants Okonomi (150 Ainslie St.) and Sunday in Brooklyn resulting in the successful pop-up Yaki Tiki, which brought delicious Japanese BBQ and tiki drinks to the a/d/o courtyard.

JT Vuong and George Padilla (formerly of Okonomi and YUJI Ramen) and the Sunday in Brooklyn hospitality team (Todd Enany, Adam Landsman, Exec Chef Jaime Young, and bar director Brian Evans) are back again with Rule of Thirds and Greenpointers stopped in for dinner earlier this week. Greenpoint Original Pizza Opening at Former Carmine’s Original Pizza This Saturday

A new pizzeria is scheduled to open this Saturday morning in a cozy Norman Avenue storefront that was formerly home to Carmine’s Original Pizza.

Greenpoint Original Pizza (93 Norman Ave.) will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday during a ribbon cutting ceremony with Assemblyman Joe Lentol in front of the storefront at 10 a.m., according to owner Baldassare Pantaleo. Continue reading

Bagel Point Celebrates Soft Opening on Thursday (7/4)

Bagel Point (699 Manhattan Ave.) will celebrate its soft opening on Thursday, July 4th, following months of renovations that combined three storefronts at the corner of Norman and Manhattan Avenues next to a G train subway entrance.

The menu features hand-rolled bagels, a variety of traditional and vegan cream cheeses, housemade lox, hand-carved roast beef, and non-processed meat options.  The cafe will eventually be open 24 hours and offer online ordering and delivery, but for the soft opening there will be reduced hours (opening at 6 a.m.) and orders can only be placed in-store.

The owners of Bagel Point, Sam Kaplan and Adam Alsorra, also operate Smith Street Bagels (202 Smith St.) in Brooklyn. The new space in Greenpoint has a spacious interior with plenty of window seats and tables in the center; there’s even outside seating on the newly installed benches on the Nassau Avenue side of the building. ‘Provisions by Sunday’ Opens Monday (4/22) Inside A/D/O

Opening on Monday (4/22) inside of A/D/O (29 Norman Ave.), Sunday in Brooklyn (348 Wythe Ave.) will introduce their new food and bar program at the space where Norman previously operated.

The new restaurant “Provisions by Sunday” will be open every day 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will feature an abbreviated menu of their signature brunch menu items and cocktails. The space and restaurant will be available to host private events of up to 600 guests as well.

The “Provisions by Sunday” residency will run through early summer, and the Sunday in Brooklyn team said that a brand new restaurant at A/D/O is to follow in a statement, .

Ultimately, the Sunday Hospitality team (Todd Enany, Adam Landsman, Jaime Young) will reimagine the food and beverage experience at A/D/O, launching a brand new restaurant with partners JT Vuong and George Padilla (formerly of Williamsburg favorites, Okonomi and YUJI Ramen). Together, they are excited to build a new home in this burgeoning neighborhood and to share their community-minded philosophies and guest-focused experiences.

A new feature of the service at Provisions by Sunday gives customers the ability to place orders from their phones. “There will be people in the space helping to sort of take orders…instead of trying to flag someone down to order food or drinks, you’ll be able to order from your phone whenever you want something,” said Adam Landsman from Sunday in Brooklyn.

While the popular live jazz brunch from the Norman-era is not expected to make a return, Landsman said that the interactivity of art, design and food in one space was a major draw and that art installations by A/D/O are planned.

Provisions by Sunday hours will be 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. every day.
