As the darkness of a winter squall was fast approaching, the bright lights of the Nutcracker photo booth beckoned with promises of warm Holiday merriment in the Land of Sweets.
And as with any fairy tale, a heroine emerged…

This year’s Nutcracker-inspired holiday market is transforming the rustic Greenpoint Loft into a magical winter wonderland filled with local artisans, tasty treats and TONS of free interactive activities. With so much good cheer under one roof, make it official and RSVP! Come early and stay all day.

Holiday markets are a beloved Brooklyn tradition (you know we love ’em). This year, a brand-spankin’ new one is hitting the scene right here in Greenpoint! It’s the Sugar x Spice Holiday Markers Market (RSVP here for updates), happening this Sunday, December 17th from 1:00–6:00pm at Brooklyn Bazaar (150 Greenpoint Ave.)
The market’s 30+ vendors will include a full range of gift-ready wares, from eco-friendly clothing to artisanal dioramas, bath and body products, handmade jewelry, crocheted accessories, stationery, artwork and more.
Extra-festive fun awaits in the form of a free wintry photobooth, live performances, tarot card reading and other seasonal surprises. If that’s not enough to convince you, the first 20 customers are getting gift bags at the door… and they don’t even have to be on the “nice” list!
If you’re looking for the perfect gift or you just want to support small businesses and artists in our area, you owe it to yourself to come by this quirky, fun market. Did we mention? Candyland is becoming a reality this weekend and it sure would be sweet if you could join us for a sugary good time. We’ll be riding a candy high over at Greenpoint Loft (67 West St.) this Sunday, December 10, from 1 to 7pm, surrounded by our favorite indie vendors, a host of free activities, and more hot buttered & spiced rum than we know what to do with. The Greenpointers Candyland Market will be chock full of local treats, including live jazz from The Big Cat Menagerie, craft beer and Hungarian Wine respectively from Greenpoint Beer & Ale and Palinkerie, and more than 60 talented makers selling their lovingly made wares. Head up to the mezzanine for a free tarot reading by this post’s author, nail art by Peenk, a massage from [email protected], an instantly created digital avatar from Capture Me in 3D or a henna tattoo from Miss V. On Sunday, December 1oth, we are bringing sugar & spice and everything nice to our Winter Candyland in the beautiful Greenpoint Loft!

Our annual Holiday Market is the biggest one of the year and we are expecting 3,000-4,000+ shoppers to join us for a day full of free fun activities, live music, and shopping in one of the most beautifully restored historic spaces in Brooklyn.

I don’t remember the point at which the simple days of working on a wishlist of gifts in the days leading up the the holidays were over. All I know is this time of year hasn’t exactly been a time to kick back and relax for a long time. As much as I love shopping for gifts and the festivities surrounding it, it’s time consuming and takes a lot of work. Add to it, work on putting together a massive market, and you are going to want to look for some short cuts. But since we’ve set a high bar on creative seasonal cocktails that are served at the markets, we didn’t want to dilute quality either. Continue reading

We chatted with Suzanne, our fellow Greenpointer, who creates these comfy, yet stylish, winter looks.
GP: How did you learn to make these beautiful knit creations?
Suzanne: I learned how to knit in 2003 while living in remote town in eastern Washington State. My Grandmother had always knit, and it proved to be a good way for us to spend time together when I came back to New York and began visiting her in a nursing home. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a couple of years prior, but, as with all patients with memory loss, she retained the knowledge of the things learned in her youth. Continue reading
