Have you ever gone to see a band, super pumped, and witnessed a crowd of people standing around sipping craft beer and stubbornly refusing to do little more than nod their heads in time to the music? Yeah, we’ve all been there—it’s awkward for everyone. Refreshingly, when Israeli trio Balkan Beat Box took the stage at Brooklyn Steel (319 Frost St) in late April, this was definitely not one of those moments. In fact, inside Bowery Presents’ newest place to party—specifically designed for large crowds and good visibility of the stage from virtually any vantage point—I experienced a moment of live music euphoria: a few seconds of music video-worthy bliss where literally everyone in the massive venue was off their feet, jumping in the air.
Long story short? When vocalist Tomer Yosef tells you to jump, you jump… splashing craft beer and all.
If you’ve ever sought out quality ceramics in our nabe, you’ve no doubt discovered a crowded market. And yet Calyer Ceramics has managed to break through and shine. Founder Michelle McLaughlin grew this independent, creative brand from the ground up, starting out in her own apartment.
We recently met over coffee to discuss the craft and what it takes to grow a creative business… Continue reading
Manhattan Avenue’s hip boutique Line & Label held a successful first Dreamcatchers Workshop at the end of last month, and we stalked around the work table to snap pics of our local DIY lovers making their own beautiful creations.
For $50, attendees were given instructions and a wide array of materials to experiment with including leather, feathers, beads and fringe. The resulting dreamcatchers varied in color, size and decoration. “We were truly impressed with everyone’s finished piece, and so happy everyone finished in time too,” says founder Kate O’Riley on the boutique’s website.
Local lovers of vintage are revving up their engines (and eating extra protein bars) for Bushwick’s First Annual Vintage Crawl—an event that’s sure to see hoards of shoppers rummaging through racks and sprinting from shop-to-shop this weekend (June 4-5).
Here’s a breakdown of the stores involved, so you can get hyped up and plan your shopping route…
The Holy Grail of craft fairs took place last weekend at the Brooklyn Expo Center, proving once again that Brooklyn knows how to get seriously creative. We were mesmerized by rows of homemade house wares, clothing, jewelry, and paper goods. A refreshingly unique assortment of products were on display, from metallic inlay ceramics and vintage jewels, to hysterical signs.
Couldn’t make it to the market? Never fear. We snapped the best booths so you can relive the Renegade experience–and shop some of our favorite brands online.
