Bushwick Open Studios — #BOS2018 — returns this weekend! Though it of course can’t compare to our own neighborhood’s (and Greenpointers-produced) Greenpoint Open Studios earlier this summer, this weekend’s art fest in Bushwick will be a blast of art filled fun and madness. Take a tour of the industrial chic neighborhood we all love and take in some local art while investigating open studios.
Hundreds of Bushwick artists will have their studios open Saturday and Sunday for visitors to meet them and see their work. For the 2018 edition of BOS, Art During the Occupation Gallery is pleased to show SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE, a painting solo by Sharilyn Neidhardt concerning the rootlessness, alienation, and ultimate freedom of city living in the 21st century.
For a timeline of events, see below, and for more info, visit the BOS site here.
Friday: Launch Party 7–10 PM at 119 Ingraham Street
Art During the Occupation Gallery — in partnership with our friends at Trans-Cen-Der Art Group, Temporary Storage Gallery, and Brooklyn Fire Proof — are throwing an art networking party to mark the LAUNCH of 2018’s Bushwick Open Studios Festival.
Saturday and Sunday: BOS from 12–6 PM (120 Ingraham Street)
Come to the Brooklyn Fire Proof building to take in four floors of local artists! Run by Art During the Occupation Gallery Bushwick — a not for profit contemporary art space showing subversive and difficult work — BOS is an annual event celebrating the multitude of talent and artistic achievement Bushwick has to offer. They delight in serving as a platform for discourse on work that is challenging to authority paradigms, feminist, queer, anti-establishment, hyper-aggressive, mystic, and/or joyously sexual. Our gallery was launched in 2015 by Christopher Stout who serves as gallery founder and director.
Ok so it seems that Summer is officially done and done… and for two weeks we’ll get to enjoy “Fall” before Winter sets in. So get out there! Catch some international burlesque, see a movie, visit an art studio! Because soon enough it’ll be zero degrees with a wind chill of -20.
North Brooklyn offers a cozy mecca of studio spaces for artists to work, live in, and Instagram. While the app has earned a reputation for promoting endless boredom check-ins and vanity selfies – plenty of artists are taking advantage of the platform to promote events and shows, document their work in various stages, and link with other like-minded creatives.
I scoured the ‘gram to find my top 8 pick of talented painters in the neighborhood with impressive archives, all for your viewing pleasure. Continue reading →
Perhaps you’ve met one of the awesome bartenders, John F. Moore, Jr, from The Habitat. If you haven’t, then I just feel bad for you. Besides bartending and being an engaging part of the neighborhood, John is a vibrant artist. His paintings are being featured at the Cobra Club starting this Friday for Bushwick Open Studios. Bushwick Open Studios went down over the weekend and it was quite a blur. Highlights included live street painting, a traveling life-size music box, a sweaty full house at Slideluck Bushwick… and yes, kiddie pool performance art. ALSO homoerotic paintings involving wooden children’s toys, a dancing bearded man in a dress, and life lessons about face tattoos. It looks like there was also a bin of water bottles that people could sit in…unless they were just hanging out in a dumpster. AND last but not least, my personal heaven, A GIANT MACAROON SCULPTURE. Is there anything more Bushwickian?
Enjoy the visual feast below, curated from the finest gallery in all the land: Instagram #BOS. Art selfies included (and encouraged).

Bushwick Open Studios was an amazing success. While the giant newspaper map was unhelpful in terms of navigating the huge area, especially via bicycle (the preferred method of travel for art loving hipsters), we still managed to find our way by focusing on the studios of friends and wondering the streets. When someone suggested we check out the map, I felt like I would have a seizure. “Just put that away!” We did cover a lot of ground in a short time and I humbly bow down to the organizers, who took on a beast and slayed it.
