Cat-Calling All Feline Friends: The Greenpoint Cat Club Meets Tomorrow!

stray catDo you want to help every stray cat you see? Does the sight of whiskers make you go “awww?” Well, you’re not alone! The Greenpoint Cat Club meets once a month at Archestratus (160 Huron Street) to discuss issues and solve problems on behalf of the feral cats of our ‘hood. You already know that many local residents try to help the outdoor kitties. Bowls of cat food are tucked away in corners all around our neighborhood waiting to feed the hungry masses. We’re a sympathetic bunch!

There are over 50,000 stray cats in New York and hundreds in Greenpoint, presumably subsisting on kielbasa scraps and other fallen Polish delicacies. One of the major problems facing our community is that when people move, they sometimes sadly leave their house cats behind to fend for themselves. This is cruel behavior, as domesticated cats are not equipped to care for themselves in the wild. The streets are very dangerous for feral cats, and the best you can do if you find yourself in the sad situation of having to give up an animal is to find them a new home. Muddy Paws (447 Graham Ave) pet store has adoption events every Sunday from 2pm-5pm and you can find someone there who will help you find the resources you need. Continue reading

Mr. Gray Needs A Home / Sweetest Cat Ever

Is Mr. Gray Your Cat? Help Find A Home For This Gorgeous Animal!

Have you ever met my dog D? She is amazing and we found her at the Ridgewood Reservoir – an amazing place I highly recommend you visit.

This past weekend as we walked through wildflowers and watched swallows dive into the pond, we heard a sweet kitty cat cry. Mr. Gray, as we are calling him, was hunting for lizards (there are lizard there) but he wasn’t doing a great job. When we called back to him, he ran to us and we were immediately friends. This cat is amazing. And he is gorgeous: light gray with subtle stripes and golden eyes. A real stunner.

He was clearly not feral, but he was very hungry and on the skinny side. We couldn’t walk away from this magical animal and while I waited for Jon to get the cat carrier, Mr. Gray sat in my lap, purring and gently playing with me. Some animals are gifts – Mr. Gray is a gift. (Jon’s theory about all pets at the reservoir is that they were abducted by aliens, had their brains scrambled and return as perfect pets.) Mr. Gray is perfect.

We brought the handsome boy to the vet  and he was extremely calm in the car and friendly to the doctor. With no tags or microchip, it turned out that he is a young male neutered cat who has a recently healed surgery scar on his shoulder. He is feline leukemia and FIV negative and was given a flea bath. We can’t seem to find Mr. Gray’s owners and are seeking a new wonderful home for this incredible animal.

If this is your cat, please email me – editor (at) green pointers [dot] com. If you would like to adopt Mr. Gray – I am bringing him home from the vet tonight and you can come and see him anytime.

Please spread the word so we can help find Mr. Gray a home.

Recipes Gone Wild: Duke’s Spring Cocktail, Le Rana

Happy Friday! Have you looked at your superfluous (but super cool-looking) wall of international clocks lately? Because it’s 5 o’ clock in Paris, comprenez-vous? The Manhattan Cocktail Classic, NYC’s celebration of all things boozy and bibulous, starts next week (I’ll drink to that) and there will even be a bit of Brooklyn representin’ on this side of the river. New York Distilling Company (located at 79 Richardson in Williamsburg), will be hosting a guinguettes-inspired, Parisienne-themed brunch at their distillery on Saturday, May 10, hosted by Allen Katz. But all brunches aside, why not cheers to the freakin’ weekend tonight by stirring up some lovely, springy cocktails chez vous? I asked Patrick Dacy, of Greenpoint’s own Duke’s Liquor Box, on Franklin, what sort of flavors he’s been into lately, and he sent over the specs for a gorgeous, little libation he’s deemed “Le Rana”— a nod to its mingling of French and Mexican spirits. Notes of wood, smoke, ripe fruit, and bitter quinine are brightened up with fresh citrus juice and a splash of crisp ginger beer. Allons-y! Vamos! Continue reading

Recipes Gone Wild: Adina Grigore’s “It’s Spring So Let Your Skin Know It” Mask

Yesterday morning I decided to go for a run along the river, and I thought to myself Oh hey! I think it’s warm enough to don my shorts today!  After finding them in the bottom drawer buried under sweatshirts and long johns, I put on my running shorts, laced up my sneakers, and ran out the door. Down the sidewalk I bounded, happy to feel the sunshine on my skin for the first time this season. Along the way, I stopped to tie my shoe, and, in doing so, came face to face with my bare shins. Gasp! They were looking pretty shabby and neglected—pale, dry, and in need of some TLC. After wrapping up my run, I wrote to my friend and neighbor Adina Grigore (of S.W. Basics) to ask if she had any good skincare recipes to get me glowing again. Well of course she did! And in no time I had a recipe for a gentle exfoliating mask made from simple, basic ingredients (and on a sidenote, it actually sounds like it could be good on a slice of toast!).

Dog-napped Greenpoint Pup Returned to Owners

Here’s a happy story to brighten your day: a stolen Greenpoint pup has been returned to his owners!

©NewYorkPost

On August 30th Greenpoint couple Allie Caran and Zach Botham went out to buy birthday gifts for their French bulldog Oliver and came home to find their apartment on Manhattan Ave. burglarized and their beloved pooch missing.

“We were robbed of everything, and then when we realized Oliver was missing we completely freaked out,” Caran told the New York Post. The Post reported $18,000 worth of stolen items were taken from the apartment in addition to the couple’s most prized possession, Oliver. Continue reading

“Saving Badass Dogs From Idiot Humans” – The Most Badass Animal Rescue in Brooklyn

Of the dogs who stood in front of NYC Pet on Driggs Ave. on Saturday, a surprising number had both first and last names. There was a collie-shepherd named David Hasselhoff, a basset hound-boxer named Patrick Henry, and a Calhoun hound-pit bull named Faye Dunaway — in addition to a “super mellow” beagle mix, whose dirty blonde erudition and Germanic allure had apparently compelled a previous owner to name her Carole Lombard. Though some of the dogs were still considered puppies, most were at least twice the size of a shoebox, and all of them were hoping to find adopters, as part of the weekly-to-biweekly events organized by Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue.

Dog Found: “Chico” – Black Pit in Williamsburg – For Adoption

An animal loving Greenpointer found Chico, this adorable Black and White Pit Bull in Williamsburg, near Graham and Withers on Tuesday 12/18. Chico is an intact male, about 60 pounds, is very friendly with people and wants belly rubs constantly.

If you have any information about the owner or are interested in fostering or adopting Chico, please call (917) 609-0624.

The kind woman who found him is boarding him for 2 weeks until the owner is found, has had him vaccinated and will be neutering him soon. She has spent over $400 on his care so consider donating anything for Chico’s care.

She noticed the signs she put up have all been removed so Chico has likely been abandoned.

For updates, like Chico’s Facebook page and to make contributions for his care, chip in here.
