Whiskey Burger: Good Burgers, Good Whiskey (and Bourbon), and Tasty Cocktails

IMG_20151015_180043817_500

When 12 year neighborhood staple The Mark Bar shuttered and signs of construction began, many were sad. But really, there’s no reason to be sad. The former owners of The Mark Bar (also of The Lobster Joint), Bob Levitt and Tommy Chabrowski, are now the owners of a great new restaurant, Whiskey Burger.

Levitt and Chabowski knew they needed to give The Mark Bar an upgrade. After much thinking, they decided to pursue a 12 year dream of opening a whiskey & burger restaurant. The menu is focused on different types of burgers, fries, sides, and salads. Good whiskeys, beer, wine, and an interesting selection of cocktails are on the menu for drinks. Continue reading

Archestratus: A Book and Food Lover’s Sanctuary

_NMH5808_500

Book lovers and foodies will truly appreciate the newest addition to the neighborhood: Archestratus Books and Food. The new store is a bookshop that specifically focuses on cookbooks and books related to food, along with gifts, pens, notecards, and cooking gifts and accessories. There’s also a café in the back serving sweet and savory homemade Sicilian pastries, along with tea, coffee, beer, and wine.

The bookshop is named for Archestratus, who was a poet and philosopher, and one of the first foodies (before that was a term). Continue reading

The Naked Dog: Romantic Italian Spot Brightens Up Java and West

NakedDog_Ears_525pxMany people have been anxiously awaiting the opening of The Naked Dog. There aren’t too many eateries on West Street, and this restaurant front has been teasing Greenpointers since the end of 2014. Many delays – permits, that sort of boring thing – prevented them from opening up until this past week. Continue reading

Dancing Under the Williamsburg Bridge: BRUNCHRave with Morning Gloryville

Dancing under the Wlliamsburg Bridge
Dancing under the Wlliamsburg Bridge

Dancing is an amazing way to start the day, isn’t it?

Last Saturday, while most people were sleeping in, BRUNCH Ravers at Morning Gloryville‘s party were doing yoga, dancing, jumping in flying rose petals, getting massages, playing in a kiddie pool, or meeting new friends. It was kind of surreal when it all ended at 2pm, and people were heading home after an awesome morning out, when many people hadn’t even left their homes (or beds) yet. Continue reading

Slick Willie: ‘Authentic New American’ Restaurant Inspired by Greenpoint’s Most Infamous Criminal

interior_slick_willie_cherie_YIt all started with an idea, and a few years later, new restaurant Slick Willie (179 Meserole Avenue) is a dream come true for three friends, Jeremy, Josh, and Benjamin. It took quite a while to construct and design the space, as they signed the lease on the property just before Sandy hit New York, and then everything was delayed as construction priorities changed post-storm. However, the restaurant finally opened a few weeks ago and the trio are now ready for business!

While some might think Slick Willie was named after Bill Clinton, it’s actually named after one of Greenpoint’s famous residents, Willie Sutton. He was a legendary bank robber, a “gentleman bank robber,” so called because he never killed anyone. He robbed banks because “that’s where the money is,” and the FBI gave him the name “Slick Willie” in reference to how many times he’d eluded them Continue reading

Just Taste It: Delicious Pizza from Ria Bella

Ria_Bella_Rosie_de_BelgeonneDo we really need another pizza place in Greenpoint? Well, probably not, but Ria Bella (1049 Manhattan Avenue) is pretty good and I am more than happy to add it to my rotation of options.

The pizzas are baked in a ceramic oven, with either a thin or traditional Sicilian crust. Some of the pizzas are pretty creative – one that they especially recommend is the Sfincione – a square pie that has tomato basil sauce, sautéed onions, anchovies, caciocavallo cheese, topped with roasted bread crumbs (Bread crumbs on pizza? Oh yes.), and extra virgin olive oil. Continue reading

Jungle Cafe: Fresh, Delicious & Vegan

Jungle Cafe
Jungle Cafe

“Wow,” someone said as I waited in line on opening day. “I’m not even a vegetarian, but there’s definitely way too much bacon in this area. This is a relief.”

Jungle Cafe (996 Manhattan Ave) is certainly a relief for the vegetarians and vegans of North Brooklyn. But fortunately it’s also incredibly delicious and so comes as a welcome addition to the rest of us as well. Continue reading

Good Morning Gloryville – Obviously Brooklyn has Breakfast Raves!

Dancing or yoga?

For most Greenpointers, early mornings will find us hitting the snooze button a few too many times. Others are out dancing. A recent trend has sprung up in North Brooklyn (and across New York City) – people hitting the dance floors before their morning cup of coffee.

A group named Morning Gloryville, whose motto is “rave your way into the day” really knows how to wake up by dancing hard to awesome music with great people in a fun setting. Continue reading
