Since posting an eyewitness account of a body recovered near the India St Pier off Greenpoint on Monday night an identification by the medical examiner was reported by DNAinfo.

The body, which was found in the Newtown Creek, was that of Steven L. Middleton, a 21 year old who went swimming in the East River off of Williamsburg a few days earlier.

Our thoughts are with the family of this young man during this very sad time.

About Jen G

After living in NYC my entire life, I found the strongest sense of community in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Running this blog is truly an honor and the best part is meeting its readers in real life. Everyday I am energized by smiles and inspiring conversations with fellow Greenpointers who tirelessly do and create incredible things that are good for our community and share the same love I have for life here. If you see me walking with my little dog "D" - please say hi!

I first lived in Greenpoint in 1965 when I moved from Pennsylvania. I left the Point in 1988. I have strong memories of the old neighborhood where as a kid I sold newspapers, worked in a liquor store, cleaned people’s basement and played street sports–stick ball, stoop ball, off the wall, acey deucy, etc.

It was always a neighborhood so I trust the new stewards of the Point are taking care of it. Good luck.
