East River Ferry Up and Running!

Hallelujah, praise the lord! This weekend the East River Ferry resumes regular service.

Whew, that was a close one! Since the ferry landing’s mysterious tumble into the East River this winter, many of us wondered whether the pier would be up and operational in time for the G-train debacle. With mounting pressure from the public and Councilman Steve Levin, the owner of the India Street pier hustled to complete the new ferry landing just in the nick of time. Let us breathe a collective sigh of relief and cross our fingers the rush job didn’t compromise the quality of construction.

The temporary shuttle buses services from India Street to North 6th pier in Williamsburg will remain in effect until Wednesday.  Click here for the summer service schedule.

UPDATE: India St. Ferry Landing Now Under Repair

Crane for Repair of India St Pier / Photo: Jackie Hoving

After months of head scratching and hand wringing, it appears that work to repair the India Street ferry landing has finally visibly begun, just nine days before next Friday’s G-train closure plunges North Brooklyn into a five-week transportation brown out. It appears city officials are now “cautiously optimistic” that the landing’s owners will finish repairs before the G shuts down.

In our in-depth June 6 post on the topic, we noted a disconcerting lack of transparency about the repair process and called on local political leaders to pressure the city and the landing’s owners to publicly commit to a timeline that would ensure the ferry is operational before shutdown.

Body Found in Newtown Creek Identified as Steven L. Middleton

©reverendfashion - Steven L. Middleton

Since posting an eyewitness account of a body recovered near the India St Pier off Greenpoint on Monday night an identification by the medical examiner was reported by DNAinfo.

The body, which was found in the Newtown Creek, was that of Steven L. Middleton, a 21 year old who went swimming in the East River off of Williamsburg a few days earlier.

Our thoughts are with the family of this young man during this very sad time.

Dead Body Recovered Near India St Pier Last Night in Greenpoint

© OrianaBk

Last night, I received a text from a friend and trusted local resource – Meg from Dandelion Wine, “Dude. They just found a body floating in the river off the got pier.” A girl ran into the wine shop and said she was taking a sunset selfie with her dog when she noticed the crowd and a police boat pulling a dead body out of the water. Spud Pile Failure Caused East River Ferry India St Pier Ramp Collapse

East River Ferry Ramp Plunged into East River © Alan Tansey

The biggest craziest news in Greenpoint last week was the East River Ferry ramp collapse at India St Pier. No one was injured thankfully, but their motto, “Relax, we’ll get you there,” is a bit ironic.

There is no telling when service will resume from that location. In the mean time, passengers can take a FREE shuttle bus to No. 6th St. Us Greenpointers sure do love shuttle buses, right folks?

And finally there is some insight as to what happened.  Continue reading

East River Ferry’s India St Pier Ramp Collapsed in Greenpoint (Photos Added!)

East River Ferry Plank Fell Into The East River; Image @daviddymmel

We Greenpointers absolutely love riding on the East River Ferry, but what happened this morning around 9am at the India St pier is very unsettling.

The Daily News reported that after commuters had crossed the ramp and were safely on the ferry, the ramp detached and plunged into an icy cold East River. Needless to say, we are thankful no one was injured, but they were understandably pretty freaked out.

Service is suspended at this time and an investigation into WTF happened is happening. More photos after the jump!  Continue reading

Greenpointers Competes In Brooklyn Fishing Derby: First Catch 33 1/4 Inch Striped Bass! (not ours)

Team Greenpointers AKA Jon

Greenpointers is competing in the Brooklyn Fishing Derby! Well, it’s team Jon & Jen! And in reality Jon is doing all the dirty work, like hooking nasty fish tails for bait and everything else that involves contact with the East River. My job is to keep it classy with sparkling wine and cheese plates and to be there for the photo op when we catch the biggest East River monster!

Stay tuned as we document our fish wrangling for the next month. It’s sure to be an exciting and stinky urban angling adventure!

Ben Sargent and Robin Shulman

What is the Brooklyn Fishing Derby? We weren’t too sure how it worked so we checked out the opening party at Dream Fishing and Tackle (673 Manhattan Ave) in Greenpoint. Ben Sargent, of Underground Lobster Pound fame was grilling burgers out front while contestants picked up their awesome t-shirts and fishing gear!

(Honestly, the $25 entry fee is worth the rad t-shirt even if you don’t drop a line in the water.)

“It’s a pretty good cross section of Greenpoint,” Ben explained. There were born and raised Greenpointers, tattooed hipster Greenpointers, Polish-American guy Greenpointers, young Latino Greenpointers and some badass fisherwomen Greenpointers. And everyone was there to fish the East River!

For $80 we got the “FULL BIG HOOKER” package, which included a sweet fishing pole, measuring tape and the instructions for submission, which involved taking a photo of the catch and sending it via text or email within one hour.

From now until November 17th, 2012, we will be fishing along the Brooklyn side of East River from the 69th St Pier in Bayridge all the way up to Long Island City.
