Williamsburg Vintage Shop Stays Afloat Amongst Rising Tide of Commercialization

“If people are ready to buy a blazer in July, I want to have it here,” says Breanne DiDomenico about the inventory of her vintage shop on the corner of Metropolitan Avenue  and Havemeyer Street.

At almost any clothing reseller in Williamsburg, passersby can find pieces from the 70s or 80s that have made a comeback. But not all have achieved quite the combination of vintage curation, retailing of new independent brands, and Instagram influencer following that Horizons Vintage (381 Metropolitan Ave.) has.

When DiDomenico opened up shop in 2007 — in a space right next door to where her current store sits — she already had some years of vintage-hunting under her belt.

She was always interested in fashion, but from elementary school into her high school years, the Virginia native held onto dreams of becoming an animator. Around age 15, however, her parents started taking her and her friends to thrift stores on the weekends in the outskirts of DC. Continue reading

As you crawl to work today….Get ready for the 2nd Annual Vintage Crawl

It is rough out there, today’s commute will not be easy for most of you. As you crawl into work today keep your head up kids…the 2nd annual Vintage Crawl is this Sunday, November 11th from noon-8pm (Greenpoint/Williamsburg).

Founded in 2011 by two Williamsburg residents and vintage enthusiasts, the Vintage Crawl makes finding great pieces at affordable prices easy, while promoting local Brooklyn businesses.

The event will feature a self-led bargain hunt through the best vintage shops in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The map featuring all discounts and promotions throughout the neighborhood is available through the mobile platform, Domino Street. Please note there are also tons of great deals at your local bars!

This year’s Fall crawl is happening at a difficult time, in order to support the Vintage Crawl is coordinating donation opportunities for Sandy relief efforts at each store. Not to mention that a lot of the participating stores already have initiates in place.
