When it comes to food and drink, North Brooklyn is known for its fabulous fare. On Sunday afternoon, over 40 of the area’s restaurants, bars, distilleries and wineries came out to strut their stuff in East River State Park during the 8th Annual TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint festival. Le Gamin (108 Franklin Street), Greenpoint Beer and Ale (7 North 15th) and Amami Sushi (57 Nassau Ave) all represented our slice of North Brooklyn.

The festival not only tastes great, it supports a great cause. TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint is produced by The Firehouse North Brooklyn Community Center (formerly known as Northside Town Hall), an organization “working to renovate and operate the former Engine Co. 212 Firehouse for Community activity. The Firehouse will provide a permanent home to neighborhood social justice organizations for continued advocacy and direct services to Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The Firehouse fosters civic and cultural engagement with original arts programming and community gatherings.” Other community organizations, like North Brooklyn Angles, a coalition of neighbors helping neighbors fight food and housing insecurity, and Billion Oyster Project, a harbor restoration and citizen science organization, also made it to the fest.

As the festival got underway amid sunny skies, live music and games, booze was flowing and bites were flying off the shelf. Some restaurants even ran out of food before the festival was over. Scroll down for a look at some of the fabulous food, drink, and local purveyors in attendance!

Zona Rosa brought their taco A game at TASTE 2016.

Last year’s TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint was nothing short of epic—we left dizzy with tequila courtesy of 21 Greenpoint, and our bellies full of tasty tacos, pulled pork sandwiches, pizza, and other delectable bites from North Brooklyn restaurants. The fest is an ideal way to sample the range of flavors at a number of different restaurants, all in one go. Going strong in its 8th year, this year’s event on September 17th from 1-5pm and is taking over the Williamsburg waterfront (90 Kent Ave). In addition to the more than 40 food and drink vendors, they’ll again host live music, demonstrations and other fun activities for everyone. TASTE is put on by our own North Brooklyn community center The Firehouse, so the proceeds go to benefit the renovation of the former Engine Co. 212 Firehouse for community activity. The Firehouse will provide a permanent home to neighborhood social justice organizations for continued advocacy and direct services to Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Greenpointers readers (that’s you) can get 40% off your tickets by following this link. And it’s a sweet deal—$21 gets you 4 tastes and 2 drinks, $36 gets you 8 tastes and 4 drinks.

Kickball Feuds, Hostage Fashion & Celebrity Lambs — The Hook-Up 10/9

Everyone knows about the unrivaled people-watching potential of McCarren Park, but not everyone lives to see a standoff between a kickball bro and an indignant nap queen. Is she “the most selfish person in the world?” Or does he “think he fucking owns the park?” You decide.

According to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper, no one can tell the difference between a Greenpoint hipster and a person who recently emerged from under a rock.

There’s a history behind TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint, and it has a lot to do with any strong community vibes you still catch around these parts. In 1975, more than 200 residents participated in a 16-month sit-in to preserve funding for city services, and last month, they honored them in the most Brooklyn way possible.

A famous lamb of Greenpoint fame has famed its way upstate. After being spotted dining at Five Leaves this spring, Smokey the lamb is now back at Violet Hill Farm in West Winfield, N.Y., but it appears his time in the city has instilled him with a troublemaking streak. “He had a ram buddy that he was hanging out with hardcore,” said his owner.

Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint Battled Rain with Booze & Cupcakes and Won

IMG_2577_500

This weekend, every outdoor NYC event, from the 90s Fest to the Taste Talks Barbeque, battled the kind of wicked New York rain that really unleashes its full furor when you’ve closed your umbrella for the fourth time and ventured out into the open.

This past Sunday’s Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint found its participants gamely laughing through the rain and sharing tent space with welcoming food vendors.

TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint This Sunday (09/07)

There’s a trillion great places to eat and drink in the area, but rarely enough time (or stomach space) to give everywhere a try. That’s why this Sunday’s Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint event is a splendid idea. Now in its 5th year, the East River State Park flavor extravaganza will host stalls from dozens of local restaurants, bars and makers all offering appetizer-sized tastes of their delicious wares.

Among the 50+ vendors you’ll find The Elm, Reynard, Extra Fancy, Maison Premiere and Brooklyn Winery, along with Greenpoint gems such as Bakeri, Ovenly, Dirck The Norseman, No Name Bar, and our all-time favorite ice cream makers Phin and Phebes. Continue reading

TASTE WILLIAMSBURG GREENPOINT SEPTEMBER 9

TASTE WILLIAMSBURG GREENPOINT
© Erin Lee

Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint is coming up on September 9, 2012 from 1pm-5pm at CitiStorage. Erin took some drool-worthy photos from last year’s event to get your taste buds going. I got an email from the owner of Teddy’s Bar & Grill this morning which explained that aside from being the biggest and best North Brooklyn foodie mecca, the funds raised from this event go toward converting “the legendary, shuttered, ‘people’s firehouse,'” into a community and cultural center in Williamsburg called the Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center. They have raised “$1.1M in government funds,” but additionally must raise the rest of the funds for this project to demonstrate wide support for the Town Hall and “trigger the funds.” Of course, Greenpoint-based Kickstarter is hosting an online fundraiser where they aim to raise $10,000! And you can buy tickets to the event to support this cause as well!
