We know McCarren Park is a great spot for chilling, but come May, it will be a great spot for grilling! In previous years, would-be Brooklyn grill masters have had to keep their grilling on the DL or risk getting a ticket. Not anymore! The parks department in kicking $50,000 our way for nine double-wide grills, 18 picnic tables, 3 charcoal-disposal bins and two additional trash cans. All this new equipment will be stationed around the park in 3 separate locations.

For park-goes who don’t want to do their own grilling, but would still like to chow down, the Parks Department will be soliciting bids for on-site food vendors. Of the applicants, the department will choose 3. Two will operate trucks in the park, and the third will set up shop in the field house!

City views from Northern Territory’s rooftop

I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of spring is being able to finally emerge from the dark and the cold to sit outside in the sun, preferably sipping on a nice saison and surrounded by greenery. Here are a few places worth the trip.

This Australian-themed bar features an expansive rooftop with its own bar and wooden bench tables that channel something of a summer beach vibe. Gaze across the East River to watch the sunset over the city or to ponder the Empire State Building’s color of the day. Add a Beer & Shot into the mix for $10 during happy hour, grab an Aussie burger, and you’re set.

Righteous Tacos at the Holy Smoke BBQ Pop-Up

Holy Smoke 7_greenpointers_swallace
Look for the sign, be rewarded with tacos!

If you’ve wandered by the San Damiano Mission (85 N 15th Street, formerly Holy Family Slovak Catholic Church) over the past two weekends, you’ve definitely seen some goings-on in their courtyard. That would be their summer outdoor taco pop-up, Holy Smoke NYC. Run by neighborhood restaurateur Josh Cohen and his Extra Fancy co-owner Mark Rancourt, Holy Smoke was created to raise money for the Greenpoint Community Organ Collective, the organ inside of San Damiano that is in desperate need of restoration. Every weekend this summer they’ll be hosting the pop-up with tacos, beer, rosé in a can, and even a little water feature to help keep you cool.
