Ice Cream Meets Design at Davey’s Ice Cream

Going into ice cream actually started as a joke for David Yoo. After beginning a career in fashion and advertising, he decided in 2012 that it was time for a change. A few jokes later, he came to the realization that “ice cream is like blank canvas” ready for creative interpretations, and getting into the ice cream business might allow for the real hands-on creative hijinks he was searching for. So he enrolled in the Penn State Ice Cream Short Course, Class of 2013; gave his job a six-month notice; and by Friday, September 13th, Davey’s Ice Cream was open in the East Village. A Peep Inside Cacao Market : A Place Where Chocolate Dreams Come True

shelves_3_cacao_market_greenpoint_rosiedebelgeonneGreenpoint: home to craft brewers, small-batch ice cream makers, and luxury tea ateliers. And just when we thought things couldn’t get any more up-market, along comes the cherry on the top in the form of an artisanal chocolate shop.

Cacao Market opened this week on Guernsey street and is the newest venture by Maribel Lieberman, the Honduras-born owner of Soho’s chocolate boutique MarieBelle New York.

The new Greenpoint store is housed beneath the existing MarieBelle chocolate factory, which has been quietly churning out sweet treats since 2004. When the downstairs space recently became available it seemed the perfect opportunity to open a Brooklyn outlet. Continue reading

Spiked Hot Chocolate and Pumpkin Agnolotti from Five Leaves Actually Make Winter Seem Bearable

One of the reasons Five Leaves (18 Bedford Ave.) is so loved is that it always feels inviting no matter what the season. Spring and summer means packed tables of attractive sun worshippers lining the pavements outside, but in colder months there’s nothing better that holing up inside for an evening of great food and delicious cocktails. Last Friday was one of those such nights and we took great delight in ducking out of the chill night air into a cozy candle-lit corner to try some new seasonal additions to the dinner menu.
