The night dancing of the Giglio at the Feast of Our Lady Mount Carmel takes place in Williamsburg tonight at 7 p.m. The annual festival runs through July 21, and tonight the famous four-ton spire will be hoisted during a procession that involves over 300 lifters, approximately 80 are first time volunteers. It’s not just a 12-day church carnival with midway games, ferris wheel, sugary drinks and fried foods, but the fest also carries with it a strong Italian tradition.

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast which takes over No. 8th near Havemeyer in Williamsburg for more than a week with sausage and zeppole vendors, dunk tanks and water balloon games and dangerous looking children’s rides – all under the watchful eye of the gigantic Giglio structure – is over before you know it.
While new constructions are rising around the feast in every direction, it’s great to see an over 100 year cultural tradition going strong in Brooklyn. Continue reading
