I first tried green chile on a trip to Albuquerque many moons ago. I devoured a whole plate of them with chilaquiles and eggs, looking out over a dry flat plain baking under that expansive blue sky that is particular to the southwest. The next morning I ate huevos rancheros smothered with green chile. I managed to eat green chile with at least every other meal during my trip.
As a native New Yorker and equal opportunity chile lover, I’ve come to view green chiles as a kind of mythical food that I could only truly enjoy amidst the red rocks of Jemez, or during a gem-toned desert twilight at the west end of Route 66. Perhaps it’s that mythical quality that inspired Noah Chaimberg, owner of Heatonist and fancy hot sauce purveyor, to put on the “Chiles & Chili” event last Sunday. Continue reading →
This weekend, every outdoor NYC event, from the 90s Fest to the Taste Talks Barbeque, battled the kind of wicked New York rain that really unleashes its full furor when you’ve closed your umbrella for the fourth time and ventured out into the open.
This past Sunday’s Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint found its participants gamely laughing through the rain and sharing tent space with welcoming food vendors.
Taste Talks, a two-day conference on Brooklyn Food and Drink, announced its curatorial voice with April Bloomfield (of the Spotted Pig) at its helm. The event, which took place on September 14th & 15th, brought notable food, chefs and taste makers together in a bevy of curated panels, discussions, workshops, and cookouts.
Among the roster of activities, I signed up for three panels and Cook it Raw, a collaborative outdoor event where chefs worked together to create a meal using locally-sourced ingredients and as little electricity as possible – all in under 6 hours. Below are highlights from each, including quotes to add to the Brooklyn culinary repertoire.
