Attending a screening of a food documentary may feel unnecessary because America’s poor diet and over-reliance on processed foods is now a big loud national conversation. Words like local, organic, sustainable, farm to table, fresh, whole, raw, and clean are ubiquitous descriptors for how we aspire to eat. But rather then fetishizing a carefully curated diet, The Park Church Co-op and Down to Earth Farmers Markets recently partnered to host a different kind of food discussion. Both groups share an interest in examining the ethically questionable practices surrounding food distribution. Recently at the McGolrick Park Farmers Market in Greenpoint, we chatted with the ONE and ONLY Barry Schwartz of Barry’s Tempeh. Not only is he Brooklyn’s resident tempeh-whisperer, but he’s also the chef lined up for the Vegetarian Feast Fundraiser this coming Sunday, July 26th. Down to Earth Markets is delighted to announce that the McGolrick Park Farmers Market will move indoors for the winter months to the Lutheran Church of the Messiah beginning on Sunday January 5, 2014. The church is located at 129 Russell Street, directly across the street from the market’s current outdoor location on Russell Street, between Driggs and Nassau Avenues.
