Poets, Screenwriters, Fiction & Non-Fiction Writers: Summer Writers Workshops In Greenpoint!

Write Brooklyn
988 Manhattan Ave

Charles Bukowski once said, “writing about a writer’s block is better than not writing at all.” For the writerly types, writers block is no joke, but chances are you’d like to tell the world about something more compelling than writers block. If you often put pen to paper or hands to keyboard to hone your craft but could use a little guidance and structure to help complete a project, this workshop series might be for you. Local writers group WriteBrooklyn is launching workshops in Greenpoint next month, at 988 Manhattan Ave—an elegantly designed creative space. The 8-week workshops are taught by experienced filmmakers, writers and poets, range from Screenplays to Nonfiction, Poetry and Fiction, and meet on designated evenings. Each of the workshops will set you back $450, but they’ve made room for two scholarships per workshop (which means the lucky recipients attend for free). Check out the list of workshops and instructors here. Continue reading

Get To Know: Eckford Street Studio

A Figure Drawing Tuesday in action at Eckford Street Studio

Entering Eckford Street Studio is akin to discovering Candyland, except instead of candy, here you will find every nook and cranny crammed with a rainbow of colorful art supplies. It’s like Ollivanders, except instead of a wand, here you will get handed a paintbrush!

The studio, located at 70 Eckford Street, isn’t just a magically quirky place for your children (or inner child), it is also a seriously-minded community organization instrumental to bringing innovative art education classes to the neighborhood. Founder Kristn Melkin has an extensive background in art education, including time spent as part of the Guggenheim’s Learning Through Art initiative. At Eckford, Kristin works with an experienced staff to organize innovative arts classes as well as coordinate a program that connects artists who teach with local schools. This petite yet incredibly ambitious studio space and community center feels ripe for growth. Continue reading

Meyers Bageri’s (667 Driggs Avenue) first stateside bakery began as a Saturday pop-up, in the space they now occupy full-time—the former home of Margo Patisserie. Back in February, word began to spread of Saturday’s pop-up and the lines quickly followed. In late July, Meyers Bageri took over the space completely and has subsequently been introducing North Brooklyn to Claus Meyer’s brand of New Nordic Cuisine. Continue reading

Photo Earth & Wellness Cafe

Did you know that reviews by the American Institute for Cancer Research show that as much as 40% of cancer risk may be related to diet?

The contemporary Brooklynite’s diet (I’m looking at you!) which consists of going out and enjoying overly indulgent bacon infused everything (even cocktails) can leave us all feeling sluggish, unwell and not ourselves. Sound familiar? Not to mention it may put us at risk for disease down the line.

For the price it costs to go out to a fancy (heavy) and expensive dinner once, why not take a course (which includes 4 informative & hands-on classes) and learn to cook for your health!

Earth and Wellness Café (397 Graham Ave) is offering a Food for Life Cooking Course, which includes 4 classes on the following Thursdays (3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10)

from 7–9pm and costs on $135.

Plus they are offering a DEAL! 10% OFF discount to Greenpointers readers!
