Coffee and Tea Festival in Greenpoint this Weekend

tea_coffee_festival_greenpoint_karl_mischler Image by Karl Mischler

Coffee Drinker? Tea Sipper? Probably.

Well, depending on the extent of your hot beverage appreciation, you may wish to get along to the 10th Annual Coffee and Tea Festival which is being held at the Brooklyn Expo Center this weekend.

The event will hold over 80 stall-holders including Greenpoint’s own Cafe Grumpy and Miss Tea Organics, all offering tastings and info about their brand. Throughout the weekend there will also be seminars on subjects such as the oxidation effects of green tea, home brewing, tea blending, and cold brew coffee.

But if you do go near the Expo Center this weekend, lookout for dodgy sidewalk parking along Oak and Franklin Streets which, according to Brooklyn Paper, has started to be an issue.

The event runs 11.30pm-5pm Saturday and Sunday at The Brooklyn Expo Center, 79 Franklin Street.
Tickets are $25 can be purchased here or on the door.
A special ‘VIP’ ticket costs $35 and includes early entrance and a goody bag.

On view now at Cafe Grumpy: Craig Peterson’s “Coffee Art” series

"Sailboat" (2014) ©All images courtesy of Craig Peterson

There is something playful happening at Cafe Grumpy on 193 Meserole Avenue. It stops me when I’m looking for a seat in the recently renovated space—almost a dozen colorful and fun paintings made with brewed coffee, pen, ink, and watercolor line the walls in neat wooden frames. I want one, I think, and my best friend will want one, too. The barista confirms that he wants one as well, and so I look up the artist: Craig Peterson of Indiana, Pennsylvania. A day later, we discuss his “Coffee Art” series via telephone. Continue reading

From Bean to Brew: Inside the Café Grumpy Roastery

Cafe_Grumpy_Sack_Rosie_de_belgeonneGrumpy by name, awesome by nature, Café Grumpy has been one of Greenpoint’s most beloved coffee shops for almost a decade and now, with the addition of a new roastery, there’s even more to love.

Founded on the corner of Meserole Avenue and Diamond Street in 2005, Grumpy has since spread to five other locations including their most recent opening at Grand Central Station, where they triumphantly replaced a Starbucks. The cafe also brushed with fame during its starring role in HBO’s Girls.

In 2009 Grumpy started roasting their own beans in the back room of the Greenpoint cafe, but this year’s increased production demands led them to seek out a larger roasting space. Fortunately an ex-floristry warehouse just a few buildings down became available and their coffee-roasting palace was born. I met up with head bean buyer and ‘coffee educator’ Cheryl Kingan who gave me a grand tour of the roastery and the low down on the entire process of bean to brew. Continue reading

On view now at Cafe Grumpy: “The American Lens” by Jeremy Fink

An exploration of the iconic ©Jeremy Fink

If you ask yourself the deep questions before your morning coffee, head over to Cafe Grumpy on 193 Meserole to get your cup of Joe and slice of America while Jeremy Fink’s project The American Lens is up. What makes an icon? Where is this country headed? What’s happening to immigration reform? Am I really eating a biscuit made with kale + pinenuts + gruyere? Continue reading

Cafe Grumpy is Killing It, One Starbucks at a Time

Grumpy Starbucks

It’s pretty cool when a local business beats out a chain, so we have to give some props to Cafe Grumpy, which will be taking over the Starbucks location on the east side of Grand Central.  Sources told the Huffington Post that Starbucks’ lease was up and apparently the the MTA has a policy of not allowing big chain stores to apply for a new one.  “It’s part of our effort to keep the space unique,” an MTA spokesperson said. GIRLS Trailer Hits the Internet

Have you guys heard of this show, GIRLS? No one ever talks about it. Oh wait, sorry my brain just traveled back to the early 2012 for a minute–what I meant to say was EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THIS SHOW ALL THE TIME (even James Franco).

Whether you love to hate it or hate to love it, Girls is back for a 3rd season and L Duns (can I call her that?) just released the HBO trailer on this other popular thing called the internet.

The end of last season got a little wonky, as the writing team tried to give Hannah’s quirkiness a back story with a mental illness that was never brought up before and made very little sense in the context of her character. Watching her shove one-too-many-Q-tips into her ear was less than enjoyable and might have caused one cast member, Charlie, Marnie’s love interest played by Chrisopher Abbott, to actually leave the cast because he “didn’t like the direction things were going in. ”
